Specification of Lettersiatent.
'Patentedfnng 8, 19522.
Application filed November 12, 1918.k Serial No. 262,180.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT PARTIN, citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Talkeetna, in the Third Division of the Terri tory of Alaska, have invented new and useful lmprovements in 7Vfrenches, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to wrenches, and the object is to provide a tool which shall be simple in construction and more efficient in operation than the similar tools 'ordinarily employed.
A further object is to provide member comprising a movable jaw carrying atb readed shank, one portion of the shank being cut away longitudinally and the threaded portion thereof engaging a segmentally threaded portion of a sleeve for controlling the shank and jaw, the end of the sleeve cooperating with the said aw.
A still further object is to provide a construction of the character specified whereby a movablejaw is thrown to approximately the correct position, corresponding with the size of the nut to be operated upon, the movable jaw then being tightened by the rotation of the sleeve` the segmentally threaded portion of which engages the threaded shank subsequently to the movement of the jaw to the aforesaid approximate position.
TWith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of the device in elevation, Figure 2 is a longitudinal section; Figures 3, 4 and 5 are transverse sections on the lines 3-3, 4-4 and 5 5, respectively.
The movable jaw is designated 10, and includes a flat surface l11, and a notched surface 12 the latter cooperating with the similarly notched surface 13 on the opposite jaw 14. The jaw last named includes a plain surface 15 cooperating with the plain surface of the jaw 10.
A shank 16 includes a flat side 17 eX- tending longitudinally, the remainder' of the surface of the shank from the point 18 to the point near the rear end of the shank being threaded. J aw 14 is provided with a bore 20 having a flattened wall 21 engaged by the fiat portion 17 of the shank 16. J aw 14 is further provided with an annular portion 22 and an annular shoulder having a curved surface.
A sleeve 25 is provided with a longitudinal bore 26 and with a segmental threaded portion 27 engaging the threads of the shank 16 when the sleeve is rotated to a po-y sition whereby the threads 27 pass from the flattened portion 17 to the shank. When the wrench. is placed in position for engaging a nut or the like, the sleeve is in such position that threads 27 are opposite fiattened side 17. This permits of the prompt movement of the shank and the jaw to approximately the correct position, at which time the sleeve is rotated causing engagement between threads 27 and the threads of the shank for eifecting the accurate positioning of the jaw. A coil spring 30 sur rounds the outer end of shank 16 and engages the end of sleeve 25, the outer end of the spring abutting the Harige 31 on the shank, so that the sleeve will be normally spaced from the end of the shank by the spring and the jaws will be normally in contact. Pressure by the hand on the end portion of the shank will compress the spring and force jaw 1() to an outer position, and the removal of the hand will permit jaw 10 to approach jaw 14, engaging the nut or other object between the two jaws, after which the sleeve is rotated for producing engagement between threads 27 and the threads on the shank. e
Sleeve 25 is provided with an inner annular channel 35 engaging an annular flange 23, and end portion 36 of the sleeve rests within annularchannel 22 of jaw 14.
What is claimed is:
In a wrench, a shank provided with a 95 threaded portion, one side of the shank being cut away at the threaded portion to form a plane surface, a jaw carried by one end of the shank, a second jaw provided with a bore through which the shank passes, the 100 jaws having work-engaging portions on each side of theshank, providing independent tools for engaging round and flat surfaces, respectively, a sleeve having a bore receiving the shank and provided with a segmen- 105 tal threaded portion within the bore for en gaging the threads of the shank, said sleeve also having an annular channel within one end of the bore, the channel having a curved wall, the second named jaw having a por-110 the Sieeffe,"retainingthefjziws in timed position when the thiemed elements :ire disengaged.
