UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to wrenches, and particularly to a quick, adjustable wrench, the movable jaw of which reciprocates with relation to a stationary jaw, and means are provided by which, after the adjustment occurs, the parts are held in position while the wrench is manipulated.
It is an object of this invention to provide a special feature for the adjustment of the movable jaw and for retaining it in its adjusted position by simple manipulation of the handle with relation to a stem which carries the movable jaw.
It is a further object of this invention to produce a body member having a rigid jaw associated with it, and a handle rotatable with relation to the body so that the parts are in operative relation with one another for the adjustment stated.
It is a still further object to provide a wrench of the character indicated which is strong and durable and comparatively inexpensive to produce and maintain.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of an adjustable wrench;
Figure 2 illustrates a central vertical longitudinal section thereof;
Figure 3 illustrates a transverse vertical section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 illustrates a similar View to Fig. 3, but showing the threaded portions of the adjustable jaw disengaged.
In these drawings I denotes a hollow body having a slot 2 therein, and a jaw 3 rigid with the outer end of the body. A stem 4 is slidable in the body and has a jaw 5 which is movable with relation to the stationary jaw, and the said stem has a lug 6 slidable in the slot and projecting from the side of the body for manipulation of the stem longitudinally of the body, that is to say, the stem may be moved so that the movable jaw contacts a nut or the like, engaged by the stationary jaw, and in this way a quick adjustment of the jaws with relation to the nut is attained. The inner end 'I of the stem is rectangular in cross section and its opposed edges are provided with threads 8. A hollow handle 9 has two ribs I0 and there are spaces Ia between them, in which the inner end of the stem moves or reciprocates during the adjustment of the jaws. The ribs have threads I I which, when the handle is turned, engage the threads of the stem, and thus the jaws are held in adjusted position during the manipulation of the wrench.
It is seen that the handle is rotatably connected to the body by a joint I2 formed by the overlapping edges of the material of the handle and body, thus permitting the handle to rotate so that the spaces between the ribs are brought into alinement with the inner end of the stem in order that the stem can be moved independently of the handle, and when the adjustment is attained, as stated, the handle is turned so that the threads of the ribs and stem hold the parts in operative position.
It is apparent from an inspection of the drawing and the foregoing description that the operator may with one hand manipulate the handle to engage or release the threads of the stem, and that when they are released, the stem may be moved by gripping the lug and operating it longitudinally of the slot in the body In order to limit the movement of the handle with relation to the inner end of vthe stem, the handle is provided with an isosceles stop or stud I3, thus limiting the rotation of the handle with relation to the stem.
I claim:
A wrench comprising a hollow body having a longitudinal slot and a jaw rigid therewith at its outer end, a stem slidable in the hollow body and having a jaw for coacting with the stationary jaw, a lug on the stem projecting through the slot of the body whereby the stem is manipulated longitudinally in the body, the said stem being rectangular at its inner end and having threads on opposed edges, a handle rotatably mounted on the hollow body, a pair of diametrically opposed ribs extending substantially the entire length of the inside of said handle, the edges of the said ribs having threads to coact with the threads of the stem, and the said handle having spaces between the ribs in which the inner end of the stem reciprocates, and a stop on the inner wall of the handle adjacent one of said ribs for limiting the movement of the handle when the said stop engages the side of the inner end of the stem.
