SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 476,841, dated June 14, 1892.
Application tiled March 19, 1892. Serial No. 425,603. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. TOMEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the county of Daviess and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful NVrench, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches of that class known as sliding jaw; and the objects and advantages of the invention, together with the novel features thereof, will hereinafter appear, and be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure l is a perspective of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In practicing my invention I employ a hollow stock 1, which is provided with or termiv nates in a head or jaw 2, constituting the fixed jaw of the wrench. The stock terminates at its opposite or inner end with a handle 3. The stock is bored or provided with a rectangular recess .hand an opening 5 longitudinally disposed is formed in one wall of the stock and communicates with the said bore. At its rear edge the stock is provided with an opening 6, and at the upper and lower ends of the opening with lugs 7, having countersunk bearingrecesses S.
A rotatable bolt 9 has its opposite ends reduced to form bearings 10, and the same take into the countersunk bearings in the lugs 7. This bolt is provided at its rear side with thumb-lug 12, and at its inner face a series of transverse teeth 13 are formed upon the bolt, the said teeth extending a slight distance into the bore of the stock.
14E designates a shank, rectangular in crosssection or otherwise shaped to tit the bore of the stock and mounted for sliding therein. The outer end of the shank is provided with a head or jaw 15, which constitutes the sliding jaw of the wrench and is adapted to coact with the jaw 2. The rear side or edge of the shank is provided with a series of transverse teeth 1G. The teeth of the shank are slightly inclined, as shown, in one direction, while those of the bolt are inclined in an opposite direction and to the same extent.
This completes the construction of the wrench, whose operation is as follows: In order to adj ust the wrench, it is simply neccs sary to rotate the bolt, which may be readily accomplished by the thumb of the operator pressing the thumb-lug to one side, so as to bring that portion of the bolt provided with teeth out of alignment and engagement with the teeth of the shank of the sliding jaw. rlhe shank of the sliding jaw is provided, preferably, with a button or lug 17, which projects through the longitudinal slot 5, formed in 'the stock, and by grasping this lug the shank may be slid in or out of the stock, and consequently the movable jaw adjusted with relation tothe stationary jaw,such movement being limited by the slot. When a proper adjustment has been secured, in order to lock the two jaws in their adjusted relation, the thumb of the operator, operating against the opposite side of the thumb-lug, is employed to partially rotate the said bolt7 so that the teeth thereof are thrown into alignment and engagement with those of the shank. The inclinations given the teeth preventthem from disengaging accidentally.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I provide a wrench composed of very few parts, all of which may be strongly constructed and are not liable to any excessive wear and that the two jaws may be adjusted with accuracy and expeditiously. The oppositely-inclined teeth of the bolt and shank serve to draw the shank inwardly when the bolt is oscillated to a locked position, and thus after the jaws have been adjusted to a nut the inward oscillation, slight as it is, will serve to clamp the nut between the jaws.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a wrench, the combination, with the hollow stock terminating at one end in a handle and at the opposite end in a fixed jaw and provided at one side with an opening, beai" ings being formed above'and below the same, of a shank mounted for sliding in this stock and terminating at its outer end in a jaw, a boltinounted for oscillation in the bearings IOO Le f 476,841
and provided atits inner face with a series of transverse threads for engaging threads on the shank, and a thumblug opposite the threads, substantially as speeied.
2. In a Wrench, the combination,.with the hollow stoek terminating at one end in a handle and at the opposite end in a ixed jaw and provided at one side with an opening, bearings being formed above and below the same, of a shank mounted for sliding in the stock and having its rear side provided with series of ine-lined teeth and at its outer end provided with a jaw, and an oscillating bolt mounted in the bearings and provided with a series of inclined teeth at one side, said teeth being disposed opposi'tely to those of the shank and provided in rear of the same with a thumb- 1ug,substantially as speeilied.
3. In a wrench, the combination, with the stock having a rectangular bore, said stook terminating at one end in a jaw and at the opposite end in a handle provided at one side with a slot and at its rear side with an opening, the slot and opening eommunioatin g with the bore, and bearing-lugs formed above and below the opening, of a shank mounted for sliding in the bore and having its rear side provided with transverse teeth, a jaw on the outer end of the shank, an oscillating bolt mounted in bearings in the lugs and provided at its inner side With transverse teeth, a thumblug located on the bolt opposite the teeth thereof, and a stud mounted onthe shank and extending through the'slot, substantially as specified.
