ransom/an Application filed March 5,
T all whom it may concern:
lie it known that HENRY J. HAMMANN, a citizen of the United States, resldmg at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jar-Cover Removers, of which the following is a specification, reference being hacLtherein to the'accompanying drawing.
The invention relates to jar cover removers and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a pair of pliers of the cross handle type and the adjustable type, said pliers having their ends detachably connected to a flexible jar cover holding loop, said loop being provided with teeth for biting into and hoiding the cover. ralso to provide a toothed. wedgeblock disposed between the jaws adapted to be forced inwardly by said jaws for engaging jar cover for additionally holding the same when the jaws of the pliers are closed.
With the above and other objects in viewthe invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawin s,- described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the'drawings:-
Figure 1 is a top-plan view of the jar cover remover, I
Figure 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the jaw ends of the crossed member's.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a pair of'pliers of the cross handle type and 2 the cross members forming to said pliers. The cross members 2 are connected together at 3 in such a manner that said jaws may be adjusted in relation to each other, thereby allowing the jaws 4 to be positioned for different sizes of jar covis ers 5. The jaws 1 adjacent their outer ends are provided with apertures 6, to which apen tures the ends 7 of the flexible jar cover engaging loop 8 extends and are held against movement by nuts 9. The looped member 8 adjacent its angle-d ends '7 extends through recesses 10 in the ends of the jaws 4 thereby preventing pivotal action of the loop 8 in relation to the jaws during a jar cover removing operation or when the device is being to placedin position. The loop 8 its inner REMOVER.

periphery provided with teeth llwhich bite into the cover for securely I gripping the cover during a wrenching operation.
Disposed between the jaws 4 is a' wedge shaped block 12, the outer end 13 of which is provided with teeth, which teeth when the jaws are forced together and the wedge block 12 forced forwardly engage the side of the cover and force the same intothe loop 8, thereby insuring the proper gripping of the cover around its entire periphery by the toothed loop 8. The wedge block 12 is maintained in position between the jaws 4 b means of crossed arms 14, one end of Whic is cbnnected pivotally at 15 to the jaws 4 and the other end provided with slots. 16, which slots have passing therethrough a screw 17 carried by the wedge block 12, said screw 17 being provided with a thumb nut 18, by means of which thumb nut the frictional holding of thewedge block 12 may be varied. When the jaws 4 are forced together the threaded screw 7 will move longitudinally in the slots 16 of-the arms 14 thereby allowing the block to move to operative position. Arms 14 primaril form means for supporting and holding t is wedge block 12 in opposite position between the jaws 4, however they are held on the'jaws 4: detachably, thereby allowing the wedge block to be'enti rely removed from between thejaws, and by providingthe nuts 9 for holding the loop 8, said loo may be also removed thereby! allowing t e pliers to be-usedfor other purposes. 1
From the above it will be seen that a jar cover remover is provided which is simple in construction and one wherein the parts have been reduced to a minimum. The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful isT.:- 1. A jar cover remover comprising apair of crossed members thereby forming hand gripping members and jaw members, a flex:
