W. H. PRESTON TERMINAL LIFTER Filed Oct. 18, 1925 Patented Sept. 1, 1925.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM H. PRESTON, 01' DENVER, COLORADO.
TERMINAL LIFTER.
Application filed October 18, 1823. .Serial No. 669,333.
To all/whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. PRESTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Terminal Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools especially adapted for use in removing the terminal members from storage batteries and the like. The principal object of the invent1on is to provide a tool having screw means which abuts the battery terminal and permits the bifurcated portion thereof to slide under the terminal for the purpose of removing the same from the binding post with ease and facility.
Another object of the invention is to provide a tool whichmay be readily attached to the binding post whereby the bifurcated portion of said tool will bear against the under surface of the terminal to be removed with little or no exertion-upon the operator.
Other objects and advantages of the in--.
vention will be apparent during the course of the following. detailed description wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention as applied to the binding post of-a storage battery for the purpose of removing the battery terminal.
Figure 2 'is an enlarged detail view of that part of the tool which forms the bifurcated or gripping element.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of'the bifurcated jaws, and
Figure 4 is a detail view of the adj usting pin.
Referring to the drawing wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts the numeral indicates a battery having its binding post 11 extending upwardly therefrom and the usual battery terminal 12 surrounding the upper portion of said post. My invention consists of a tool comprising an L-shaped gripping member 18 having its limb, that portion which forms the L slightly curved, and the upper portion thereof having a sleeve 14 formed thereon for engaging an adjustable pin 15 which passes through the sleeve and said pin having its free end thereof provided with a circular opening threaded for receiving a thumb screw 16, the lower end of. which abuts the upper end of the terminal post so that when he l mb 1 ifur portion of the L-shaped member engages the post and bears against the under surface of the terminal, the thumb screw isturned until the bifurcated jaws are forced upwardly thereby forcing the terminal from its seat.
In operation this tool may be taken in hand and the operator of the same places the limb or bifurcated jaws thereof under the battery terminal and operates the thumb screw until the bifurcated portion of the jaw forces the terminal from its seat and the user ofthe device then removes the tool from the binding post by means of unscrewing the thumb screw, so that the device is ready for further use.
In view of the foregoing description of my invention, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is thought that any further explanation as to the construction, operation, and objects of this invention is unnecessary.
While I have shown and described the preferred formof my invention, I realize that various minor changes may be resorted to,.without departing from the spirit and scope of theinvention as claimed, and therefore, I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction shown nor to the combination and arrangement of parts.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the character described, comprising an L-shaped member having its lower end terminating to provide a bifurcated portion, an arm carried by the upper end of said L-shaped member and arrangedparallel with said bifurcated portion, means for adjusting said arm in a horizontal direction towards or away from the upper end of said 'L-shaped member, and means carried by said arm adjustable towards said bifurcated portion...
2. A battery terminal removing tool comprising an L-shaped'member having a bifurcated portion, said L-shaped member also having an opening formed in one end thereof, a pin adjustably mounted in said open ing arranged parallel with said bifurcated portion, a head upon said pin having an opening formed therein, and a pressure member arranged in said opening in said pin adapted to abut a storage battery binding post for removing the terminal thereof.
In testimony whereof, I have aflixed my signature. I
WILLIAM H. PRESTON.
