Description

Jan. 1, 1924 J. A. BIZZELL PIPE WRENCH Filed Sept. 23, 1922 Patented Jan. 1, 1924.
FFIE.
JAMES A. BIZZELL, OF BALTIIVIORE, MARYLAND.
PIPE WRENCH.
Application filed September 23. 1922.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES A. BIZZE-LL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Pipe rench; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact clescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the ant to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a non-slipping and non-crushing pipe wrench whereby the necessary grip and leverage may be obtained without a tendency to injure or disfigure or distort the object which is grasped, and to this end the same consists of a construction and combination of elements of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side view of the wrench having represented thereon construction lines indicating the medial longitudinal. line of the shank or handle and continuations of the planes of the jaw faces to show the relation between the sections,
Figure 2 is a plan view of the wrench,
Figure 3 is a detail view of the serrated or gripping face of the upper or drawing aw.
The wrench is of the fixed jaw type having a shank or handle 10 and the head 11 provided with divergent dragging and pushing jaws 12 and 13 of which the former carries a removable serrated gripping bloc-k let.
The faces of the jaws which converge toward the junction of the shank or handle with the head, which is integral preferably therewith, are disposed on the same side of the medial longitudinal line a of the shank or handle or forward of the plane of said medial line in the direction of operative movement of the wrench as indicated by the arrow in Figure 1. Moreover these operative faces of the jaws are arranged in planes which intersect preferably within the area of the head 11 and with the intersection occurring on the medial longitudinal line of Serial No. 590,060.
the shank or handle, the continuations of the lines of said operative faces being indicated respectively at b and c and the point of intersection thereof with the med al line being indicated at (Z, the construction lines a, Z) and 0 being dotted in Figure 1 for convenience in reference.
This arrangement of the elements of the wrench provides for a gripping action of the jaws without tending to apply a crushing or disfiguring pressure to the object engaged thereby and under conditions insuring a firm hold of the engaged object as against a tendency to slip or slide on the surface thereof.
The facing block of the dragging jaw 12 is of a length coextensive with the jaw face and has an interlocking engagement in the jaw by means of the dovetailed key 15 fitting in the undercut seat 16 in the jaw. The key and seat extends transversely of the jaw and preferably tapered slightly so that the block may be inserted laterally and when driven. to place will retain its position with out any tendency to movement due to the operation of the wrench inasmuch as the strain applied to the serrated block in the operation of the wrench is transverse to the engaging faces of the key and seat.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim iss- A fixed jaw wrench having a head and a handle or shank, a pair of divergently disposed jaws formed in said head with their operative faces arranged on the same side of a prolongation of the medial longitudinal line of the shank, said j aws arranged at an acute angle to each other and inclining away from said medial line, and said jaws arranged in planes which intersect at a point on said medial line and within said head, the dragging jaw being toothed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
