SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 6'? 1,318, dated April 2, 1901.
Application filed August 21, 1900. Serial No. 27,597. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT W. FRASER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches.
The object of the invention is to provide a pipe-wrench embodying strength, durability, and lightness and which is adapted to exert a firm and secure gripping action and is constructed in a simple manner to secure a wide range of adj ustability for engaging pipes of different sizes.
With this end in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevational View of a pipe-wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the jaws thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line of the pin uniting the jaws.
Like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A in the drawings represents the handlebar of the wrench, provided at its outer or front end with a head or enlargement B, approximately one-ha'lf of the outer or front face of which is curved and serrated to form a fixed jaw O. The remaining half of the outer face of said head is provided with a forwardlyextending tongue d of less width than the head and provided with a curved or beveled inner face d, corresponding to the curvature of said fixed jaw. On opposite sides of the tongue the head is cut away, forming shoulders having concaved seats 6.
F represents the outer movable jaw, having a curved serrated face 0 and bifurcated to form legs g, which straddle the tongue d. A pin it is passed through these legs and through a longitudinal slot t' in the tongue and pivotally connects the jaw F. The slot and pin form a sliding connection, which adapts said jaw to be adjusted relatively to the fixed jaw so that different-sized pipes may be received and gripped between them. The free ends of the legs g are rounded, as shown at g, to enter the seats c When the jaw F is adjusted inward to its full extent to receive the smallest-sized pipe the wrench is designed to engage. At its base j, between the legs, the jaw F is beveled to coact with the beveled face d of the tongue, as hereinafter described.
In operation the jaw F is automatically adj usted upon the application of the wrench to a pipe to suit the size of the pipe and to grip the same firmly and securely when the wrench is turned to tighten or release the pipe, the beveled face (1 of the tongue sliding on the beveled face j of the movable jaw to accommodate for the adjustment of said jaw and adapt the tongue to hold the jaw firmly supported. When the jaw F is at the limit of its inward movement, the curved or rounded ends g of the legs 9 seat Within the concaved seats c and prevent the jaw from tilting or slipping upward under strain. This is of particular advantage in turning small pipes, where a minute adjustment not so necessary in handling large pipes is required. In engaging larger pipes the jaw F slides outward under the pressure of the pipe until moved out to the proper extent, and then when the wrench is turned firmly grips the pipe and forces it against the fixed jaw. The pin slides back and forth in the slot in the tongue as the jaw F moves in adjusting itself, and said tongue follows the contour of the beveled faoej of the jaw and supports said jaw in its adjusted position, whether for large or for small pipe. The jaw F also automatically releases and grips the pipe when the wrench is moved back to obtain a fresh hold, whereby all the advantages of a ratchet-wrench are secured.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe-wrench comprising a handle-bar having a fixed jaw and forwardly-projecting tongue at its forward end, the inner faceof said tongue being beveled, a movable jaw bifurcated to form legs straddling said tongue IOO and having a beveled base coacting with the beveled inner face of the tongue; and a slotand-pin connection between the tongue and legs to mount the movable jaw to swing and to slide longitudinally toward and from the fixed jaw, substantially as set forth.

A pipe-wrench comprising a handle-bar having a head or enlargement at its forward end, one portion of which is curved to form afixed jaw and the other portion cut away on opposite sides to form shoulders having concaved seats, a tongue extending forwardly from the head between said shoulders and having a longitudinal slot and a beveled inner face, a movable jaw having a beveled HERBERT W.
