J. W. KELLAM. FLANGE WRENCH.
No. 499,742. Patented June 20, 1893.
Ii: 1. If: 1]..
h F /C /C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS W. KELLAM, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MINNIE E. KELLAM, OF SAME PLACE.
FLANGE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,742, dated June 20, 1893. Application filed March 2, 1893- Serial No. 464,419. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS W. KELLAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Flange-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of tools of which Letters Patent of the United States No. 487,331, dated December 6, 1892, granted to me, are an example.
The invention hereinafter more fully described and claimed, forming the subject of this my present application for patent, consists in the employment of a right angular duo-formed jaw having a bar and lever extending from one of the lateral sides of the central portion thereof about midway between the branches of said jaw forming one integral piece or rigidly or immovably connected, together with a suitable dog, carried upon said bar, and adapted to impinge the rim of a round flange automatically when the implement is used.
In the accompanying drawings Figure I is a front elevation showing in part the construction, application and operation of my invention. Fig. II is a side elevation as the same would appear looking from the right hand to the left of Fig. I, further showing construction, application and operation of my invention.
Like letters indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Aisaright-angnlarduo-formed jaw wrought upon the lower end of the bar B or rigidly or immovably attached thereto in a plane parallel to the side thereof, said bar extending upward and ending in a rounded handle-like portion 0 at its other end, the Whole presenting somewhat the appearance of an anchor.
G is a yoke carried upon the bar 13, being mortised vertically to receive the same. This yoke is provided with a socket in its head to receive the friction pin E and a strong adj ustment screw K, shown in Fig. II, and is constructed with an extended arm H provided with an eccentric I with a hand-lever j attached.
Upon the friction pin E an eccentric, reversible dog D is carried and is fitted to rotate freely, the upper rounded edge of which has a bearing against the head of the yoke at 1 shown in Fig. II.
M is a flange, and O in Fig. II represents a a section of pipe threaded to receive the latter.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
To screw a right hand threaded flange upon a suitably threaded pipe the wrench is placed upon the flange in the position shown in the respective figures with the eccentric side of the dog D turned to the right as shown in Fig. I; then, after pushing the yoke G down till the dog D is in contact with the rim of the flange, the hand-leverj of the eccentric I which had previously been turned away from is now forced back toward the lever O of the bar B till the wall of the mortise at Z and the end of the friction pin E, by contact with opposing sides of the bar B, firmly grip and bind the yoke G in position upon the latter. Now by forcing the lever O in the direction of the arrow the eccentric dog D by rolling contact automatically impinges the rim of the flange M between it and the arms k of the rightangular jaw A, screwing the flange on. To unscrew such a flange the eccentric side of the dog D is turned to the left hand and the lever G is thrust in the reverse direction. The surface of the lever bar 13 on the side next the friction pin E may be serrated to match similar serrations which may be made across the end of the latter to insure a stronger hold. The working faces ofthe branches is k of the jaw A may be provided with teeth to engage the rim of the flange. The face of the eccentric dog D may likewise be provided with teeth for a similar purpose.
I do not limit myself to the use of the particular form of dog or dog carrying yoke herein described, as many other forms if adapted to act automaticallytoimpinge the rim ofaround flange might be used in connection with my right-angular duo-formed jaw and rigidly at tached bar and lever without departing from the spirit of my intention.
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable flange wrench a rightangular duo-formed jaw, and lever-bar and lever extending from one of thelateral sides ofithe central portion of said jaw, the whole integral, in combination with a suitable adj ustable dog carried upon said lever-bar, and adapted to automatically impinge the rim of a round flange substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
2. In an adjustable flange wrench a rightangular duo-formed jaw, and lever-bar and lever extending from one of the lateral sides of said jaw, the whole rigidly connected together, in combination with a suitable adjustable dog carried upon said lever-bar, and adapted to automatically impinge the rim of a round flange substantially as and for the purposes shown and described.
3. In an adjustable flange-wrench a rightangular duo-formed jaw, and lever-bar and JULIUS W. KELLAM.
