Description

1. A. PETERSON. PIPE WRENCH.
APPLICATIDN FILED JUNE 15,'1914.

III N JOHN A. PETERSON, OF BEVERLY, MASSACHUSETTS.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification o f Letters Patent. Patented June 13, 1916.
Application filed J' une 15, 1914. Serial No. 845,176.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOI-IN A. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches and its object is to produce a wrench thatyis simple in construction and operation and that is adapted to obtain a positive purchase upon pipes of a variety of sizes. Means to prevent lateral play of the swinging jaw of the wrench are also provided.
W'ith the foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of said specification and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my im# proved wrench applied to a pipe of medium size. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the devicel applied to a very small pipe. Fig. 3 is a view of the wrench with the parts in altered position applied to a large pipe. Fig. 4 is a plan of the wrench. Fig. 5 is an inverted plan. Fig. 6 is a plan of a portion of the Wrench and is taken on line 6-1-6 of Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a section taken on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
l designates the bifurcated fixed jawy of my wrench which is channeled as at 2, which portion is extended to the surface at 3, and provided with an integral handle 4. Vithin the channeled portion of the fixed jaw an angular terminally bifurcated swinging jaw 5 is adjustably disposed upon a bolt 6 which is adapted for passage through any of the apertures 7 in said jaw. The fixed jaw and the swinging jaw are provided, respectively, with serrations 8, 9 at their free extremities for engagement with the work. Within the channeled portion of said fixed jaw a shoe 10 is slidably disposed, which shoe is introduced or removed lthrough the portion 3 of said channel, which is connected by rivets 1l to an angular flexible member l2 which extends to the heel of the swinging jaw and is disposed in a notched portion 13 thereof to retain said jaw in adjusted position upon the work and to cause the jaw 5 to grip, or obtain a purchase upon the work.
The shoe 10 is further formed with a bi-fur cated portion 14 within which one end of a pronged spring l5 which properly positions the shoe 10 with relation to the jaw 5 to cause the flexible member l2 to exert a pressure upon said jaw when the latter is in operative position, is secured by-a pin 16 and the prongs of said springterminate in eyelets 17 that are disposed about the bolt 6 carried by said swinging jaw, and further, said eyelets are formed with laterally ex tending lugs 18 adapted for engagement with annular grooves formed in the inner or bifurcated end 19 of the swinging jaw 5 which arrangement `effectually prevents lateral play of the said swinging jaw with relation to the fixed jaw, and said spring further serves to slide the shoe l() in the channel 2 as the swinging jaw is adjusted at different points in the fixed jaw. To adjust the jaws l and 5 for pipes or work of Small diameter the bolt 6 is passed through the aperture 7 in the fixed jaw nearest the handle 4 and for pipes of increasing diameter the said bolt is moved into the apertured portions of the fixed jaw more remote from the handle.
What is claimed is z- In a pipe wrench, a fixed jaw terminally serrated and having a channeled face and shank, a terminally serrated swinging jaw terminally pivoted in the channeled portion of said fixed jaw; said swinging jaw being formed with a notched heel at its pivotal end, a shoe slidingly adjustable in the channeled portion of said fixed jaw, and an angular member carried by said shoe for engagement with the notched heel of said swinging jaw whereby the serrated end of the same may be impelled toward the fixed j aw when pressure is applied to the latter in one direction. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN A. PETERSON.
