one object ofthe invention is to provide a wrench in which the jaws will yield to permit the wrench to be moved in a reverse direction over the corners ofthe nut.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a wrench whichwill be adjustable to accommodate it to nuts of different sizes. j
A further" object of the invention is to provide an open end wrench of this kind which will be of a strong, durable character.

In these drawings 1 have illustrated one embodiment of my invention and have shown the same as comprising a handle 1 having pivotally mounted thereon a jaw 2. The pivotal connection between the jaw and the handle may be established in various ways but. as here shown. that end of the handle adjacent to the jaw is slotted. as shown at and the corner thereof is rounded to form a bearing surface. The adjacent portion of the jaw structure is recessed. asshown at 4; and the recess has afrounded corner to form a bearingsurfm're to cooperate with the rounded bearing surface on the handle. Theinclined ends of the two parts of the stop overlap the inclined shoulders of the jaw and form a positive stop to limit the outward movement of that jaw, that is, to limit the movement of the slidable jaw away from the pivoted jaw.

That portion of the member 18 which extends into the socket 20 is provided with a circumferential groove 24 and a pin 25 is mounted in the wall of the socket and extends into the groove to hold the member 18 in the socket, but to permit the relative rotation of the two parts. It will be apparent that the rotation of the head 21"wil1 cause the, connecting device and the stop 16 to move toward or from the slidable jaw, thus altering the relative positions of the inclined surfaces of the jaw and the stop and changing the limit of movement of the aw. In this manner the wrench may be accommodated to nuts of different sizes. When the wrench has been placed upon a nut and the handle is moved in a forward direction, that is, downward in Figs. 1 and 2, the jaws will. grip the faces of the nut and as the pressure of the handleis against the wall 8 of the pivoted jaw there is no tendency for the jaw to move about its axis and the outward movement of the slidable jaw being prevented by the stop 16, it will be apparent that the nut' will be very firmly gripped between the jaws and may be rotated vby the wrench. l/Vhen the handle is moved in a rearward direction, that is, upwardly in Figs. 1 and 2, thepivoted jaw will move about its axis, thus carrying the slidable jaw upwardly and away from the stop 16 and permitting the two jaws to be separated an increased distance sufficient to enable them to ride over the corners or" the nut, as shown. in F 2. Assoon as the jaws have passed the corners of the nut they will be restored to their normal positions by the action of the spring pressed plunger 7 and will take a fresh grip on the nut when the handle is again moved it'orwardly. v 7
, /Vhen the wrench is designed for use on nuts of a single size only the adjustable feature may be eliminated and the wrench shown in Fig. 7 is designed for this purpose. As there shown, the wrench corre sponds in construction with that above described, with the exception that the stop,

The operation of the device will be readily understood from the foregoing description of the several parts thereof and it will be apparent that I have provided an open end wrench, the jaws of which will'yield to permit the same to be moved from one posi tion to another on the nut without removing the wrench from the nut, thereby greatly ta cilitating the tightening up of the nut.
