T 0 allwhom z't may concern Be it known that I, CHARLns A DIES, a citizen of-the-United States of America and a resident of Chicago, in the county ofook, State of Illinois, have-inventedjcertain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches and the like, 'of which the following is aspecification. This invention relates to adjustable wrenches and like implements, and more especially to that type of the same in which a manual 'stresson the handle forces, the pivoted jaw members against the article or work, an example of which forms the subject matter of my prior Patent N 0. 1,155,136, dated September 28, 1918. Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the guide housing of an approximately rectangular shell form and having the detail structural formation hereinafter more fully described.

The plate metal housing 1 of the'present structure is formed from a blank or stamping of the shape shown in Fig. 4:, folded or bent to the rectangularv shell structure shown in end elevation in Fig. 3 with the seam or joint 11 formed by the'meeting edges, located centrally in the bottom web or wall of the structure, and with the top and bottom walls or webs preferably of an arched or segage the work or article lever or arm 8 has abutcompanion jaw 4 simultaneously with the adapted to provide receiving recesses 12 designates a' central rectangular aperture in the body of the stamping adapted in a folded condition of the same to provide the heretofore described receiving re' cess for the adjusting sleeve 5 aforesaid, and" one margin of said aperture 12 is formed with a pair of spaced recesses 12 adapted to form abutment recesses for the hereinafter described spring member by which the adjusting sleeve 5 is yieldingly held to its forward position. 17 designates a plate metal spring member of the approximately rectangular form shown in Fig. 2 adapted to encircle the guide shank 3 of the adjustable member 2 and formed with forwardly disposed upper and lower portions 17 adapted to bear against the rear face of the adjusting sleeve 5 aforesaid, whilenear its mid-height said member 17 is formed withrearwardly curved bearing portions 17 adapted to bear and have abutmentin the recesses 12 in the rear wall of the aforesaid receiving recess guide housing 1 and hold .erating sleeve having ties midway the in which the said adjusting sleeve 5 is arranged, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 5 and 6, and so that said spring member will exert 2L" yieldingly stress against said adjusting sleeve 5 to hold the same against the forward wall of said receiving recess of the said sleeve 5 and associated parts from loose movement.
Having thus fully described my said in vention what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable tool of the type described, the combination of an intermediate guide housing formed with a transverse recess and provided with an operating handle, an adjustablej aw member. moving in said housing and provided with a revoluble opbearing in the aforesaid housing recess, a companion jaw member attached to said'housing the aforesaid recess of the housing having abutment caviheight of the same, and a spring member of arectangular frame form encircling the adjustable jaw, member and formed with upper and lower forwardly extendin portions bearing against the rear end 0 the aforesaid. operatin sleeve and with central rearwardly extendingabutment projections having bearing in aforesaid abutment cavities of the guide housing.
2. Aplate metal housing for adjustable tools comprising, an initially fiat metal plate or blank formed with a central rectangular aperture, the, lower edge of which is formed with two recesses which form abutment cavities for a springin the finished housing, with a pair of journal orifices, andswith a pair of rectangular extensions at two corners, said plate or blank being bent into a rectangular shell or housing with the various pairs of orifices and. recesses intransverse alinement and with the pair of corner extensions in transverse abut ting aSSOCIELUOH to constitute short coactlng CHARLES.
