Description

March 22,1932. ,c. D. DANIELS 1,850,664-
, PLIERS Filed July 16, 192'? Patented Mar. 22, 1932v UNITED: STATES? CHARLES ID. DANIELS, ormouirranv AIR, NEW MEXICO l PLIERS 1 Application filed July 16, 1927. .Serial No. 206,272.
My invention relates to pliers and its principal object is to. provide a pair of pliers which are self adjusting and may be opened to a maximum degree.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers which will hold an object withequal grip when engaged with a small or large object.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a pair of pliers which are-positive in operation and when engaged with an object will firmly engage the same due to the novel leverage between the plier handles and jaws.
lVith the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction and arrangement of parts andoperation, to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompany-o ingdrawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective of a pair of pliers constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective of the pliers in an opened position.
Figure 3 is a perspective of one of the units of the invention. c
Figure 4 is a perspective of the pivoted jaw embodied in the invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherej in corresponding characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views the numeral 5 designates a plier handle having a forwardly extending offset jaw 6 at one end, and a relatively wide inter mediate part 5' having its upper face recessed as at 7. j
Arranged in opposed relation to the jaw 6 and cooperating therewith is a pivoted jaw 8 having its underface cut @away as indicated at 9 to provide an ear 10 whichisreceived i in the recess 7 and is' pivoted to the handle 5 by a pivot pin 11. 7
A movable handle 12 is arranged in opposed relation to the handle 5 and has its viding additional bearing surface between the jaw 8 and the handles 5 and 12. In addition, this extension ends of the jaws when the latter are extended, so that small articles will not become wedged between the jaws and prevent their closing movement.
From the .dislosure it will be apparent that 5 upon separation of the handles 5 and 12, the pivoted jaw 8 will be moved, away from the jaw 6 due to the slotted connection of the extension 13 and the jaw 8.
g It will be further noted that when; the 7 v jaws are in open or closed position they willbe retained in such position, until they are further moved with respect to each other by operating the handles 5 and 12.
While Ihave shown and described the pre- '75 ferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that changes in the construction and'arrangement of parts may be made,
and that I am only limited by the appended claim.
What is claimed is A'tool comprising a handle having an OK- set rigid jaw atone end, a relatively movable jaw having; its inner end pivotally secured to the handle adjacent the inner end of the 85 rigid aw, an arm extending laterallyfrom the inner end of the pivotally movable jaw and adapted to overlap the handle at a point adjacent the rigid jaw, a second handle pivotally secured to the first mentioned handle for- 91 endis a lateral extension 17 which I 17 serves to bridge the inner wardly of the pivotal point of the pivotally movable jaw, a slotted extension carried by said second handle, said extension overlapping the pivoted j aw and projecting beyond the point of pivotal connection With the fixed jaw, and a pivot stud carried by the pivoted jaw beyond the pivot point of the latter and extending into the slot of the handle extension.
In testimony whereof I afiix mg signature.
CHARLES D. D NIELS.
