Description
H. H. KOB
WRENCH Dec. l 5, 1931.
Filed May 26, 1930 ATTORNEYS.
Patented Dec. 15, 1931 UNITED STATES HENRY HOWARD KOB, OF FoRrcoLLms, COLORADO:
WRENCH-f..
Application led May 26, 1930..` Seria1:.NO..455,626.v
My invention relates to Wrenches. The principal object is to provide a strong, compact and simple construction for a wrench whose jaws are always parallel, whether I apart or together. j
Another object of the invention is to provide handles or levers for such jaws that provide efficient means for operating the jaws. Still other objects of the invention will appear in the course of the following description.
Thile the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, it is to be understood that changes may be made in same without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention.
In the drawings like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.
Figure 1 shows an elevation of an embodiment of: my invention.
Figure 2 is a partly broken elevation, similar to that shown in Figure 1, with a movable jaw, comprised in the invention, disposed in a different position.
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3 3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the reference numeral 5 designates a relatively fixed handle or lever. A relatively movable handle or lever 6 is pivoted to the liXed handle by means of a bolt 7, which acts as a fulcrum. A nut 8, bearing against a shoulder 9 of the bolt, holds the bolt in position.
The bolt extends through an opening 10 in the movable handle and through slots 12 in the fixed handle. The body of the fixed handle has side plates 13 that are spaced apart to receive the movable handle therebetween. The movable handle Operates between stops 14 and 15 on the body of the fixed handle. The body member 30 carries a relatively fixed jaw 16.
The side plates 13 have inward ribs 17. A movable jaw 18, slidably mounted on the body 30, is grooved, as shown at 19, to be engaged by the ribs 17. The movable-jaw has a boss 20 and a stem 21. The stem 21 is recessed, shown at22, Vand slides 'in' an open'- ing'23offthe fiX'edjaw;
The movable .handle 6 has shoulders' 24' an`d'25 wliicli=ahut against the ribs 17 to limit the "opening and closingffmovements" of said1 handle; The liandle'also has 'a-curvedlre'cess 26"'to12re'ceive the hoss20.rr `Movementof the j .handle 6`is Acommunieated tothemovablejjaw 18 througiithemediumof theboss and recess. Fingers orabutments27 and 28', respectively' projectiugbeyond the shoulders24.- and 25, engage't'heboss 'and movablejaw "at opposite sides. Thefinger 28`is'disp'osed in the repositionsis'hetween the ribs 17. The recess 22 not. only receives thetipt off the finger-28,
butalisofa considerable part of said linger,
when tliehandles arein an open position, as-
shown in broken lines in Figure 2.' 1
Inthe useiof v'the f invention, it will'be cl'ea'r thatmyuwrench -may. b'e'used in either of two adj usted position s, depending upon whether of t'he'slotsf12;` InFigure 1, the closed'positionof thewrench "is shown infullilin'esand' thefopenposition is shown in dotted lines.
In lsaidview, the'bolt'fiszin the upper partl of' theslots.- Inf Figure 2, the fu'lllines represent a closedposition.of`tlie'j aws, andthegdottediliiies representfthe open positionf'of the jaws; inwhich positionsthe boltis in the 24 and 25 to limit opening and closing movements of the handle 6.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A wrench comprising pivotally connected, crossed handles, a relatively stationary jaw on one handle and a relatively movable jaw on the same handle, said handle also having an internal rib and the movable jaw having a groove disposed to be engaged by the rib, and the other handle being operatively connected with the movable jaw and disposed to abut against the rib to limit movement of the handle.
2. A Wrench comprising pivotally connected, crossed handles, a relatively stationary jaw on one handle and a relativel movable jaw on the same handle, said han le also having an internal rib and the movablejaw having a groove disposed to be engaged by the rib, and the other handle having lingers disposed at opposite sides of the movable avv to move same, the lingers having shoul ers to abut against the rib on the irst-mentioned handle, to limit opening and closing movements of said other handle.
3. `A Wrench consisting of a longitudinally and transverselv slotted handle, a relatively stationary jaw on the handle, a ,relatively movable jaw, the handle and the latter jaw having engaging rib-and-groove means slidably connecting the movable jaw to the handle, a second handle in the longitudinal slot of the inst-mentioned handle, a bolt mounted in the transverse slots of the rst-mentioned handle pivotall'y connecting the handles, the second handle having fingers disposed at oppositesides of the movable avv for communicating movement thereto, movable in the longitudinal slot of the lirst handle, and having a shoulder disposed to abut against the rib tolimit movement of the handle.
4. A wrench comprising pivotally Connected crossed handles, a relatively stationary jaw on one handle and a relatively movable jaw on the same handle, the last-mentioned handle and the movable jaw having en gaging rib-and-groove means slidably connecting the movable jaw to the latter handle.I the other handle having abutments disposed to limit movements of the movable jaw in opposite directions and to communicate to the movable jaw movements of said other handle. In testimony whereof I hereunto afix my signature.
HENRY HOWARD KOB.
