GEORGE 13. DE ARMENT, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CHAM- PION TOOL COMPANY, OF MEADVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, A COPARTNERSI-IIP COM- POSED OF GEORGECB. DE ARMENT, JAMES H. DE ARMENT, AND ALMON W. DE
ARMENT.
Application filed January 20, 1915.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the tong. Fig. 2 a plan view of the tong. Fig. 3 a section on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4c a section on the line H in Fig. 1.
1-1 mark the jaws, and 22 the handles extending from the jaws. The handles are pivoted together by means of a pin 3. Each of the handles has a transverse slot A between the jaws and the pivot and a bolt 5 extends through this slot, the bolt forming a connection between the handles holding them together close up to the jaws thus making it possible to use a very small. pivot pin. Each of the handles is provided with a fulcrum lug 6. These lugs project from opposite sides of the handles and as the handles are oflset by reason of their crossing, the lugs 6 will be in a line with the companion handle. The fulcrum lugs 6 are engaged by the projections 7 on each of the handles forming the metal for the pivot. In this way the strain on the pivot is taken up by the projections 7 and lugs 6 and this again makes it possible to use a very small pivot pin and yet have a very strong construction.
In the structure shown in the Rouse and King patent referred to, the jaws do not open positively with a movement of the handles. Instead of an opening of the jaws the bolt would move in. the slot, thus making it necessary for the operator to manipulate the same with his hands. This detracted somewhat from the efficiency of the tool. In the present invention the advantages of the Rouse and King device are retained and added to and the objection which is above referred to is obviated.

Serial No. 3,353. I
What I claim as new is 1 A tool having jaws and crossed handles; a pin extending through said handles and forming a pivot between the handles; and a connection holding the handles together between the pivot pin and the jaws, one of the handles having a slot to permit of a movement of the connection around the pivot.
2. A tool having jaws and crossed handles; a pin extending through said handles and forming a pivot between said handles, one of said handles having a transverse slot between the jaws and the pivot pin; and a headed bolt extending through the jaws and through said slot.
3. A tool having jaws and crossed handles; a pin extending through said handles and forming a pivot between the handles; a connection holding the handles together between the pivot pin and the jaws, one of the handles having a slot to permit of a movement of the connection around the pivot; and fulcrum lugs arranged on both handles and adapted to engage the companion handle, and operate against the companion handle arranged concentrically with the pivot.
4:. A tool having jaws and crossed handles, one of said handles having a transverse slot; a bolt extending through the transverse slot and holding the handles together; and fulcrum lugs on both handles, each fulcrum lug adapted to engage the companion handle and form a fulcrum receiving the strain as GEORGE B. DE ARMENT.
