TOOL.
SPECIFICAllJZON forming part of Letters Patent No. 677,770, dated July 2, 1901.
I Application iled July 30, 1900. Serial No. 25,323. (No model.) l K To all whom it mag/concern.-
Be it known that 1 EDWARD D. C. KOETH, of t-he city of Tipton, Moniteau county, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to tools; and it consists of the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinaftershown, described, and claimed.
Figure l is -a view showing one of the handles comprising my improved tool, showing the pivot-pin carried thereby. Fig. 2 is a view showing the other handle. Fig. 3 is an end view showing the handles secured together. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing the 4manner in which the parts are secured together. Figj is a side elevation showing the handles and the manner in which the tools are secured thereto.
Referring to the drawings, 1 denotes a handle,of any desired construction, having on one end an integral jaw 2, formed inwhich is a rectangular groove 3, projecting from the base of which is a pivot-pin ,4. y
5 indicates ahandle corresponding to the handle 1, having on one end a jaw 6, formed in which is a groove '7, and formed through the base of the jaw 6, within the groove 7, is an opening 8,- which is adapted to receive the pin A when the parts are secured together. The pin 4c is provided on its outer end with threads 9, threaded over which is a thumbnut 10, whereby the two handles 'may be securely held together. A 'flat surface 1l is formed on the outer ends of the jaws 6, the
' purpose of which is to receive the shoulders formed on the tools which are to be carried by the handles 1 and 5 and to afford the tools a firmer hold than would be provided on a round surface.
In Fig. 5 is shown a leather-punch applied to the handles, the projecting portion integral with the upper member 12 resting within a groove in the lower handle and the proposition.
p jecting portion integral with the member 13 resting Within a groove in the upper handle, the said projecting members being provided with openings through which the pin 4 passes, thereby holding the different parts rigidly in l have shown here a limited number of tools which may be secured or attached to the handles; but it is manifest that the number that may be used is unlimitedand may include, among others, shears for cutting tin, te., pincers for different uses, saws for different purposes, pipe-tongs, pruning-blades, wire-cutters, pliers, and others too numerous to mention.
A tool constructed as described requires -only one pair of handles for an unlimited number of tools which may be-used for various purposes. The tools when applied are rigidly held within the adjacent jaws of the different handles, and the handles are securely yheld together by means of the nut 10. The pin 4 forms a strong pivot on which the handles are allowed to operate and by means of which the dilferent tools are securely heldin position.
I claim A tool consisting of two handles having en ,larged jaws on their outer ends With square recesses in their adjacent sides and with the fiat portions 11, a projection 4 rigid with one of said ja-ws and the other jaw having/an.
opening through which the said projection is passed, in combination with suitable devices having integral square projections adapted to rest within the said recesses, and having openings through said projections to receive
