To all whom it may concern: r
Be it known that we, HARRY H. MoDna- MOTT and HERMANN J. ZWETTLER, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in wrenches,and is designed especially to provide an easily manipulated tool, which is at once efficient and durable, and comparatively inexpensive of construction.
The primary object of the invention is to 1 improve thistype of tools by combining a minimum number of elements or members to perform the functions of an efliclent and durable tool.
The invention consistsgin certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter specified and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings we have illustrated an exemplifying structure as a complete exampleof the physical embodi-.
ment of our invention constructed according to the best mode we have so far devised for the practical application of the principles of the invention, and one that has proven highly satisfactory and proficient in actual practice.
Figure 1 is a side view of a wrench embodying the invention, the jaws partly open. Fig. 2 is a similar view, with one plate of the housing detached for purposes of illustration, and the sliding jaw in a different position. In the preferred embodiment of our invention as illustrated we employ the usual handle or shank 1 with its toothedjaw 2, and the slidable jaw 3 with its rack bar or shank 4. The sliding jaw is movable in the housing 5 as readily seen in Fig. 2, and the housing is pivoted at 6 to thestationary shank 1, the pivot being formed by a rounded lug integral with the housing and movable in the circular recess 7 formed in the upper end of the shank 1. The housing is provided with an integral sidev guide plate or wing 8 and an upper removable plate 9,, the latter being secured by rivets or bolts 55 6. the shank 1 and guide the movement of the housing as it swings on the lug 6 as a pivot. An abutment 10 at one end of a cut out portion 11 of the side plates, and a shoulder 12 at the other end, by contact with the stop or lug 13 integral with the shank,
limit the movement of the housing on its pivot. The sliding jaw is held in adjusted position by means of the detent 14 which is formed with a rounded end 15 and seated in a complementary recess 16 in the housing.
A spring 17 between the detent and the wall of the housing urges the tooth 18 of the detent into contact with one of the teeth of the rack bar or toothed shank 1, at all times, and a lug 19 on the end of the shank 4 prevents disconnection of the shank and its housing, as will be understood.
The parts of the tool are assembled byfirst placing the housing, with its plate 9 removed, in position with its lug 6 in the recess 7 and the'side wing or plate 8 extending over the shank 1 as a guide. The sliding jaw is now placed in. position with' the detent and spring, and finally the plate 9 is placed over the housing with c0mplementary holes fitting over the lugs or posts 6 and then these posts are headed to form rivets to hold the plate rigid with the housing. It'will be noted that the plate 8 has an abutment 10' and cut out recess 11' similar to those of the plate 9, to co-aet with a lug similar "to the lug 13 located on the other side of the shank 1.
To move the sliding jaw, the detent is pressed out by the thumb to free the tooth 18- from the rack, the jaw 3 may then be moved to adjusted position, the detent released, and the spring returns the detent to position with the tooth locked in the rack bar. In Fig. 2 the wrench handle 1 is being swung to the left thus gripping the object dotted between its jaws, and the housing has been swung out on its pivot as the jaw 3 grips the'article. In this manner the size of the article to be gripped may be approximated by movement of the detent and sliding jaw, and then the swing of the handle, either to the right or to the left, as the case may be, will cause the shank 4 to swing outwardly and the jaw 3 t0 gripv the article as above described, and shown.
