ROBERT L. ALLISON, OF HUCKABAY, TEXAS.
SCISSORS OR SHEARS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. '7, 1911.
Application filed'October 28, 1909. Serial No. 525,114.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT L. ALLIsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huckabay, in the county of Erath and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Scissors or Shears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to scissors or shears and the object of the invention is toprovide simple .and efficient means whereby the fatigue caused by the repeated and continual opening and closing of shears in the use of the same will be overcome without any lessening of the effectiveness of the scissors.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and consists in certain novel features which will be hereinafter first fully described and then specifically claimed. In the drawings,'Figure 1 is a side view of a pair of scissors equipped with my improvements and showing the same closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the scissors opened. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View of one end of the spring. v The scissors or shears are constructed in the usual manner of two members each comprising a blade 1 and a handle 2 connected to the blade by a shank 3, the two members being pivoted together by a pin or screw 4, as shown, and as will be readily understood.
Around the pivot 4, I coil a spring 5, the ends of which are extended toward the handles form diverging arms 6, following substantially the lines of .the shanks. The free ends of the arms are bent inward toward each other and then curved laterally, as shown at 7, so as to extend partly over the inner edges of the shanks of the members of the scissors, the extremities. of the said ends beingexpanded and flattened so as to provide heads 8 which enter snugly in similarly shaped sockets 9 in the inner edges of the shanks, as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Thejtendency of the arms- 6 of'the spring 5 is to separate and this action of the said armswill causethe shanks 3 to move apart so that the blades of the scissors will normally be separated and in position to engage over a fabric which is to be out. It will consequently be unnecessary for the person using a scissors or shears equipped with my (topic: or this patent may be obtained for invention to initially open the sameand the only labor tobe performed in the operation -of the tool will be that of moving the handles toward each other so as to cause the blades to perform the cutting operation. The strain upon the fingers and muscles of the hand will be greatly reduced and fatigue relieved by the use of my device, inasmuch asthe scissors will automatically open under theaction of the spring and there will be no work required on the part of the operator to open the scissors. The heads at the ends .of the spring will be preferably wedge shaped so that they will bind firmly within the sockets in the shanks of the scissors and consequently will not be easily dislodged. The action of' the spring will, furthermore, by reason of its arrangement and construction,
tend to hold the blades together laterally so that the cutting will be performed positively and without causing any lateral pressure upon the thumb or fingers holding the scissors. 1
My device is exceedingly simple in its construction and arrangement and will not detract in any way from the appearance-of the scissors, but will lie close against the side of the same so that it will not be apt to catch into the clothing of the user or otherwise obstruct the operation of the scissors, and the space between the shanks will be left unobstructed so that the scissors may be comfortably grasped Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The combination with a pair of scissors having the inner edge of each shank pro- -vided with a socket,' of a spring coiled around the pivot of the scissors and having diverging arms that extend along the sides and are bent over the edges of the shanks and terminate in wedge-shaped heads that fit snugly within the sockets, whereby to maintain the coil in positive contact with the blade against which it is disposed to prevent lateral movement.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
