WEENCH- Application "ledgjiune 9,
` To all whom t may concern:
"f Be itknown that I, LQUIs @.Crraarnnn- 11am, .afctizen of 'the UnitedStates, -resi'ding atsetters, inIootenai County andState Idaho, .have invented certain @new and useul Imp rovementsin Wrenches,o t which the followingiisaspeCiiiQatiOn. j i
i lMy npresent Yinvention relatesto improve merits; in wrenches "of i theftypeL-known `as ligator Wrenches utilizing a pair-ohjaws pivoted on a -`single Vpin in a 'rhan'dle-- used as a lever glipj 'Theprimary-obj ect of the-invention 1s thel provision of a hand tool or implement or this character which may be used either in straight alined position ofthe jaws and handle, or with the jaws disposed at an angle to the handle or lever grip, thus readily Aadapting the tool for many different uses.
The invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts which permit of both the angular and straight adaptation of the tool for use, in adjusting the jaws for use on various sizes of objects, and in details of construction as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention wherein the arts are combined and arranged in ac cor ance with the best mode I have thus tar devised for the practical application of the 'principles of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view Vof an implement embodying my invention the jaws being alined with the handle for use as a straight wrench.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view at the working end of the tool showing the jaws disposed angular-ly with relation to the handle, and showing also by dotted and full lines the range of adjustment of the jaws, part of the handle being broken away for convenience of illustration.
Figure 3 is a detail view of a fragment of the toolA showing the adjustable relation of one of the operating links.
The lever handle 1 used for the purpose of gripping the tool is of convenient size and shape for manipulation and is formed with an end socket 2 which is fashioned with an abrupt shoulder 3 that extends perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the handle. Two complementary toothed jaws 4 and 5 are pivoted in the handle-socket on 1924'. Serial j No. 718,744.
the single pivot pino-which extends `transversely through the handle and is secured therein. Une of the jawsas l is Afashioned with a vnotch 7 `inits edge Yadjacent-to the shoulder 3 Aand these two members, the shoulder and notch are adapted to engage when `the implement is to be used va straight wrench, as in Figure `1. The engagement ofthe notch withthe shoulder-af- 'roi-ds -arigidf andlbraced connection?` between he handle and the jaw l-,the"ilatter forming an .alined extension f'oi'thehandle. lTheaw isipermitted to vswing toone lside ofzwthe longitudinal center of the lever handle but is prevented by the notch and shoulder en gagement from swinging to the other side oi' the longitudinal center of the handle.
On both sides of the wrench is arranged a linkage connection between the handle and the jaws, each connection comprising a Y- shaped arrangement of levers or links as 8, 9 and 10. The links 8 at opposite sides of the tool are connected 'by a fulcrum pin 11v which is provided with heads 12. The pin passes through a slot 13 in the handle, which is of curved formation and disposed slightly at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the handle. At the side of the tool toward which the jaws may swing when angularly adjusting them, the wall of the slot 13 is notched as at 14 and adapted to receive the pin 11.
The. three links at each side of the tool are pivoted together on a single pin 15 and the two outer ends of the links 9 and 10 are pivoted at 16 and 17 respectively to the jaws l and 5.
To increase the leverage of the operating links a pinhole 18 is provided at the ends of the links 8 on opposite sides of the wrench, and the fulcrum pin 11 may be used to connect the two links 8 at these perforated ends. This arrangement of the pin 11 with relation to the perforated ends ofv the links permits of a wider extension or opening of the jaws that 1s secured in the arrangement shown.
When the tool is used as a straight wrench 6 for the purpose of bodily swinging the jaws to the desired angular position. Then the jaws may loe opened or separated by pushing pin 1l, which is guided in its slot i8, toward the pin G. This action tends to bring the links 9 and l0 into alineinent, and relatively extends the jaws 4 and 5 for use.
The nearer pin 1l is brought toward pin 6 the wider are the jaws opened within limits of the slot 13. When manipulating the wrench, the heads l2 at the two ends of the fulcruin pin 1l are grasped by the thumb and finger in order that the relative positions of the aws may he maintained. The handle l is used as a lever arm for turningthe object grasped by the jaws of the tool.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a slotted lever handle having a socket and a shoulder, of a pair of jaws having a single pivot in the Socket and a notch on one of the jaws for engagement with said shoulder, a Y-shaped linkage comprising a link and a pin in the slotted handle, a pair of links pivoted to the respective jaws, a single pivot pin con necting the three levers, and a notch in the slotted lever handle.
2. The combination with a lever handle having a slot, of a pair of pivoted jaws having a single pivot pin, in the handle, a fulcruin pin extending through the slot in the handle and provided with exterior heads, links atopposite sides of the handle connected to said pin, and a pair of links at each side of the handle pivoted to the first mentioned links and pivoted to the respective jaws. j
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
LOUIS G. CHAMBERLAIN.
