UNITED STATES HANS HILBERT THIM, F ENUIVICLAW', WASHTNGTON.
PETERS.
Application le. February 4, 1924.
To all "whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, HANS H, 'Ti-11M, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Enumclaw, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pliers, the general object of the invention being to provide means whereby great pressure can be exerted upon the object being held by the pliers with the parts in one position and with the parts in another position the devine will act as ordinary pliers.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for increasing the lever action when a tool of great gripping strength is desired, by providing two or more notches in the jaw member, any one of which can be placed in engagement with the lever meinber.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denoter like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a view of one side of the tool.
Figure 2 is a view of the opposite side.
Figure 3 is an edge view.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4 4 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a section on line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a view of the jaw member.
Figure 7 is a view of the lever member.
Figure 8 is a view of the movable jaw member 2.
Figure 9 is an edge view of the upper part of the lever member.
Figure 10 is a view of a modified form of movable jaw member.
In these views, 1 indicates the stationary jaw member and 2 the movable aw member. The stationary member is provided with the handle 3 and the jaw part is recessed as at 4. A lever member 5 has a part engaging the recess 4 and this lever member is pivotally connected with the jaw member 1 by the pivot bolt 6 which passes through Serial No. 690,631.
a hole 7 made in the recessed part of the member 1. The inner end of the jaw member 2 is pivoted by the pin 3 to a yokeshaped member 9 which is provided with the handle 10. rThis handle part has its shank 19 of spring metal and this shank is pret erably riveted to the yoke 9, as shown. link 11 is engaged by this pin 8 and its other end is pivot-ally engaged by the bolt 6. Thus the aw member 2 is movably connected with the jaw member' 1 by this link and yoke member. The members 1 and 5 are each provided with a semi-circular recess 12 for receiving the pin 8 when the tool is in closed condition and each of these members is provided with a curved slot 13, adjacent the recess for receiving the bight of the yoke member 9 so that said member can be locked to either the member 1 or the inember 5. The jaw member 2 is provided with an arc-shaped slot 14 with which notches 15 communicate. 1n one form of the invention, two of such notches are provided which form a tooth 16 and in another form three of these notches are provided for forming two teeth 16. The extremity of the lever member 5 is formed with a right angular projection 17 for engaging the slot and notches, the end of said projection being threaded to receive `the nut 18.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that by shifting the yoke member 9, by its handle 10, into the slot 13 of the member 1, the projections 17 will engage one of the notches 15 so that when the handles of the members 1 and 5 are pressed together, the lever member 5 will apply pressure to the member 2 and thus the jaws of the device will grip the object between them with much greater force than would ordinary pliers, due to the lever action set up. By providing the device with two or more notches, the lever action can be adjusted by placing the projection in the desired notch. By shifting the member 9 into the slot 13 of the member 5, the jaw member 2 is locked to the member 5 so that the members will move in unison and then the device will act as ordinary pliers.
The spring handle acts to hold the yoke 9 in place when locked to either member and the link 11 also acts to hold the jaw member 2 in place when the pliers are open nd the yoke 9 is not locked to either mem- It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire itA to be understood that I may make Changes in the construction and in the combina-tion and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall Within the scope of the appended Claims.
What l claim is l. A tool of the class described Comprising a jaw member, a lever member, a. handle for each member, a movable jaw member having a number or fulorum points, a projection on the lever member for engaging any one of these points, means for movably connecting the movable 'jaw member Witl the first jaw member, such means comprising a shiftable member, a link connecting the same with the pivotal point of the jaw and lever member and means for looking the shiftable member to either the jaw member or the lever member.
, 2. A tool of the class described comprising a jaw member, a lever member pivotally connected with the jaw member, a 4handle for each member, a movable jaw member having a number of fulorum points thereon, a yoke-shaped member pivoted to the movable jaW member and provided with a handle, a link connecting the yoke-shaped member with the pivotal point of the jaw and lever members, said last mentioned members having slots for receiving the bight of the yoke-shaped member to look the same to either the jaw member or lever member and a projection on the lever member for engaging any one ofl the fulcrum points of the movable j avv member.l
3. A tool of the class described comprising a jaw member, a lever member pivotally connected therewith, a handle for each member, a second jaw member pivoted to the lirst member and a slot and pin oonneotion between the lever member and theV HANS HILBERT THIM.
