This invention relates to a combined pliers, wrench and screw driver, in which one part provided with a plurality of notches to receive a pivot pin connected to the other part. The arrangement of one of the handles being such to place the jaw in the most convenient position for use with respect to the direction of extension of the handles, and to provide for an exceedingly simple form in the case of one handle.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art tl at in the construction of wrenches and pliers, it is very necessary to produce as simple forms as possible in order to make an article as cheap as possible which will be a good one, and in the present instance one handle is made of a straight piece of sheet metal bent into a U-shaped cross section with a piece of tool steel at one end to form the holding jaw. This enables a cheaper grade of steel to be used for the major part of this handle. while giving very satisfactory results and by securing the piece of tool steel thereto by means of rivets additional strength is given to the sheet metal handle as a structure.
The other handle, on one end of which there is a screw driver, is shaped to give the desired pliers effect in combination with the straight sheet metal handle, its shape is such hat the jaws open straight ahead. The particular shape of this handle gives many advantages in construction and use over the ordinary pair of pliers in which both handles and jaws are substantially symi'netrical.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the ccompanying drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the complete pliers.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the pliers looking from the top, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the slotted plier handle in which the pivot notches are formed.
Fig. 4c is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of pliers with a round pivot pin.
The pliers consist of a straight screw driver handle 1, which has a screw driver bit 2, formed at one end and a laterally extending Serial No. 553,489.
The shank 3 is provided with two notches as indicated at 6 and 7, which notches are engaged by a flat pivot pin 8, to hold the sheet metal handle 9 in place.
The sheet metal handle consists of a member folded up so that its edges lie apart the thickness of the shank 3, and they are connected by means of therivet 8, as well. as by means of the two rivets 10 and 11, which pass through a serrated steel jaw block 12.
The middle portion of the sheet metal handle 9, is cut away to form a slot between the steel jaw block 12, and the pin 13, to allow the handle to be moved as much as may be necessary to place it in either one of the holes (5 or 7, such shifting from one hole to the other being accomplished when the two handles are about degrees apart.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, the sheet metal handle is indicated at 20, andit has the steel jaw block 21 secured thereto by means of two rivets 22, 23, while the sides of the handle are further connected by means of a round rivet 2 1.
The screw driver handle is indicated at 25, and it has the shank 26 carrying the serrated jaw 27, which is adjacent the jaw block 21.
The shank 26 is provided with two slots 28, 29, and to insure pulling the pivot pin into the slots, the shank 26 is provided with a flat spring 30, which bears upon the web 31, connecting the two sides of the handle 20. Because of the shape of the shank 3, substan tially all of the reaction in the operation of the wrench is downwardly with respect to the open slots, and hence there is no tendency of the pivot pin to come out of said slots during the time the wrench is in use, and also owing to the shape very little pressure is required on the handles to turn a very stili'ly operating nutor pipe.
What I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construction shown in the drawings and above particularly described form within the purview of my invention.
A plier of the class described comprising a straight member U shaped in cross section forming a handle, a steel block having serrations secured to said member at one end thereof to form a jaw, an opening through the U shaped member adjacent the jaw, a second member having a straight handle, a notched shank 011 said handle adapted to extend. transversely through the opening in said first member and having serrations facing the serrations of the first member, said transverse shank having notches on the side adjacent the jaws, a pin through said on the edge of said opening to hold the notches in engagement with said pin.
