To (HZ 'whomz'l/l' entry concern: 1 "Be itzkno'wnsthat I, "W nner. :Mi LAWRENCE, a citizen ofthe United- States, residingat Springfield, in the county .of Hampdenand State of I'vIEtSSflCllHSBtlJS, have :invented new and useful Improvements :in Spark-Plug W'i'enchesmf which'the following :is 31519801- fication. r a
aMy present invention has s for its :object the provision of a. simple, inexpensive, read ily-zad'justable spark plugwrench, possessed ofia wide :range of utility. i
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constituting the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the same.
Figure 3 is a transverse section taken in the plane indicated on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a side elevation of a modification as hereinafter explicitly referred to.
Referring particularly to Figures 1 to 3:
1 is the handle member of my novel wrench. The said handle member is provided at its forward end with an angularly disposed jaw 2, the inner side of which is of angular form in cross section as indicated by 3. At said inner end the handle member 1 is provided with a socket 4 in coincidence with the inner side of the jaw 2, and back of said socket 4 the handle member is equipped, by preference, with a hammerhead 5.
At a point adjacent to the jaw 2 the handle member 1 is provided with a pair of lugs 6, and at an intermediate point of its length said handle member carries another pair of lugs 7.
Bearing in a threaded aperture 8 in the handle member, and in the same transverse plane as the lugs 7 is a screw 9 the head of which is of wing-nut type, as shown, or of any other appropriate character.
Pivoted at 10 between the pair of lugs 6 is the adjustable jaw 11 of the wrench, which adjustable jaw is of angular form in cross section at its inner side, as indicated at 12, and is of the proportional length illustrated so that when it is in its innermost position its free end will be substantially flush with the free end of the fixed jaw 2. On the said jaw 11 is an arm 13 that is disposed and movable'ibetween the lugs 7:.andis subject tothe action of; the adjustable screw. 9 so {that through; the medium of the saidscrewthe jaw 1 1. may; be strongly :set against a spark plug so that there :willabe no liability of a casual .rellea'selofthewrench from the spark plug. 1
It willibe apparentsfrom the foregoing that imytnovel .Wrench'is capable of being adaptedtocspark plugs of various sizes with the l greatest facility, andthis, notwithstanding the fact-that the wrench is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and is free of delicate parts such as are likely to get out of order after a short period of use.
It will also be apparent that incident to the application of my novel wrench to a spark plug, the upper portion of the plug will be received and accommodated in the socket 4t. In the modification shown in Figure 4:, the lugs 7 of Figures 1 to?) are dispensed with, and a single pair of lugs 6 is employed, the said lugs 6 being comparatively elongated as illustrated and being therefore adapted to resist any tendency of the arm of the adjustable jaw to swing laterally under great stress or strain- It will be also observed by reference to Figure 4 that the handle memher 1 is provided with a curvilinear tail portion 15 which is adapted to add to the range of usefulness of the wrench because of its adaptability to .be interposed between a wheel rim and a tire casingwith a View to prying the casing from the rim.
Manifestly the modification is possessed of 7 all the features of advantage ascribed to the form shown in Figures 1 to 3.
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. A wrench comprising a handle member having a threaded aperture at an intermediate point of its length and also having an angularly disposed jaw at one end, a socket in coincidence with the inner side of said jaw, and a pair of lugs adjacent to the inner end of said socket; a screw bearing in the said threaded aperture of the handle member, and an adjustable jaw pivoted between the said lugs and having a rearwardly ex tending arm the rear portion of which is opposed to the inner end of the screw.
2. A wrench comprising a handle member having a threaded aperture at an intermediate point of its length and also having an augularly disposed jaw at one end, a socket in coincidence with the inner side of said jaw, and a pair of lugs adj acent, to the inner end of said socket, a screw bearing in the said threaded aperture of the handle member, and an adjustable jaw pivoted between the said lugs and having a rearwardly' extending arm the rear portion of which is op-' with pairs of lugs at its inner side and a threaded aperture in the same transverse plane as one pair of lugs, and an angularly disposed-jaw at its forward end the inner side of which is of angular form in cross section and a socket adjacent to said forward end in co1ncidence with theinner side of the fixed jaw, in combination with a screw bearng in the threaded aperture of the handle member, and an adjustable jaw having an angular inner side and also having an arm movable between the lugs of the pair remote from the fixed j aw and subject to the action of the screw.
4. The combination in a wrench, of a handle 'member having an angularly disposed jaw at one end and also having a socket back of and in coincidencewith the inner side of said jaw, an adjustable jaw opposed and arrangedin spaced relation to the first-named jaw, said adjust-able jaw being movably connected with the handle member, and means cooperating with the handle member and the adjustable jaw to adjust the latter.
In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature.
VVILLSE M. LAWRENCE.
