Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 10, 1919. Serial No. 329,689.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUeo J. HAHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a fulh'clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to wrenches more particularly to those of the type in which the adjustment of the jaws is secured by rotating a part of the handle or shank of the wrench.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple form of wrench in which the operating parts are protected from grit, dirt and the like with which the wrench may come in contact.
It is also an object of the invention to provide an improved means for keeping the shanks of the operative parts in their proper relation to each other. d
Other and further important objects of this invention will be apparent from the disclosures in the drawings and specification.
The invention (in a preferred form) is illustrated in the drawings and hereinafter more fully described.
Drawings.
Fig. l is a section on the line 44lof Fig. 2.
Descrp time.
I The wrench comprises a shank l of cylindrical form with a jaw 2 rigidly secured thereto. This shank is hollowforthe reception at one end of a hollow shank 3 riveted or otherwise connected to the other jaw 1. This shank 3 is. threaded interiorly for engagement with the threaded end 5 of a handle 6. This handle is rotatively arranged within the shank 1 and is prevented from moving axially therein by means of a pin 7 passed transversely through the shank 1 and adapted to engage a groove 8 in the adjacent part of the handle. At its outer end the handle is provided with a knurled Patented Dec. '7 192( portion 9 while the adjacent part 10 of the shank 1 is similarly knurled so as to enable these parts to be firmly gripped for producing a relative rotation therebetween by means of the hands. means are provided for preventing the ro tation of the shank 3 and the aw l, so that rotation of the handle will cause the latter jaw to approach or recede from the aw 2. In order to simplify the manufacture, the shank 3 is preferably circular in form. Means are provided externally of the shank for preventing its rotation within the shank 1. In the first place the sides of the jaw 41 are arranged to slide between vertical walls It will be seen that i in the box-formed jaw 2. Further, laterally extending pins 11 are driven into holes in the jaw 4 for engagement with slots 12 arranged in the side walls of the jaw 2. Further, the, jaw 4 is provided with a rearward extension 13 adapted to engage the under side of the rear end of the jaw 2 in order to provide against lateral movement of the jaw 4. This is particularly desirable where the aws are made to extend laterally for a considerable distance as shown in the drawings.
In order that the handle may be locked in adjusted position a set screw 14 or other looking means may be provided.
I am aware that numerous details of construction may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
I claim as my invention: v
1. A wrench comprising a yoke-shaped frame constituting one jaw, a hollow shank rigidly connected therewith, a secondjaw slid'able within said frame, a hollow shank connected to the second jaw slidable in the first shank, a handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first sh'anlgsaid portion havinga threaded end engaging threads on the interior of the second shank, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said handle relatively to the first shank and means for preventing rotation of the second shank and jaw relatively to the first shank whereby rotation of the handle causes said jaws to approach or recede from each other.
2. A wrench comprising a yoke-shaped frame constituting one jaw, a hollow knurled shank rigidly connected therewith,
a second jaw slidable within said frame, a hollow shank connected to the second jaw slidable in the first shank, a knurled handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first shank said portion having a threaded end engaging threads on the interior of the second shank, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said handle relatively to the first shank and means for preventing rotation of the second shank and jaw relatively to the first shank whereby rotation of the handle causes said jaws to approach or recede from each other.
8. A wrench comprising a jaw of box form, a hollow shank rigidly connected therewith, a second jaw slidable within the first jaw having a rearwardly extending part adapted to engage the under side of the rear end of the first jaw, a shank connected to the second jaw, a handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first shank, said portion having a threaded end engaging threads on the second shank, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said handle relatively to the first shank, and means for preventing rotation of the second shank and jaw relatively to the first shank whereby rotation of the handle causes said jaws to approach or recede from each othe 4. A wrench comprising a jaw of box form, a hollow shank rigidly connected therewith, a second jaw slidably mounted within the first aw having a rearwardly extending part adapted to engage the under side of the rear end of the first jaw and provided with lateral projections extending into slots in the side portions of the first jaw, a shank connected to the second jaw, a handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first shank, said portion having a threaded end engaging threads on the second shank and means for preventing longitudinal movement of said handle relatively to the first shank.
5. A wrench comprising a jaw of box form, a hollow shank rigidly connected therewith, a second jaw slidably mounted within the first jaw having arearwardly extending part adapted to engage the under side of the rear end of the first jaw and provided with lateral projections extending into slots in the side portions of the first shank rigidly connected therewith, a second jaw slidable relatively to the first jaw, a hollow shank rigidly connected to the second jaw, a handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first shank, said portion having a threaded end engaging threads on the interior of the second shank, the other exposed portion of the shank being of sufiicient length to allow the wrench to be operated wholly thereby,
means for preventing rotation of the second shank and jaw relatively to the first shank whereby rotation of the handle causes said jaws to approach or recede from each other. '7. if wrench comprising a jaw of box form having a lateral extension of V-shaped cross-section, a hollow shank rigidly connected thereto, a second jaw slidable within the first jaw having a lateral extension of V-shaped cross-section and provided with a rearward extension adapted to engage the under side of the rear end of the first jaw, a shank connected to the second jaw, a handle having one portion thereof rotatably mounted within the first shank, said portionhaving a threaded end engaging threads on the second shank, means for preventing longitudinal movement of said handle relatively to the first shank, and means for preventing rotation'of the second shank and jaw relatively to the first shankwhereby ro- T tation of the handle causes said jaws to approach or recede from each other.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
