Be it known that l, EDWARD CLAYTON Cowman, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hammond, in the parish of .langipahoa and Stateof Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVrenches, of which the following is a specifi cation.
lily invention relates to wrenches and the purpose of my invention is the provision of a wrench includii'ig a stationary jaw and a pivoted jaw, the former being constructed to accommodate nuts of various sizes and shapes, with the latter adjustable to' coopcrate with the stationary jaw in effectively gripping a nut so that when the wrench is actuated a turning of the nut is effected.
I will describe one form of wrench embodying my invention, and will then point out the novel features thereof in claim.

Referring specifically to the d 'awing, my invention in its present embodiment comprises a stationary jaw J of U-shape formation and having the free ends thereof rabbeted. to accommodate plates P and to which such plates are riveted or otherwise secured so that they span the ends of the jaw. J designates a pivoted jaw formed on one end of a shank S which extends throu gh the slot provided between the plates P. At the junction of the jaw J and the shank S an ear l1] formed provided with an opening through which a pivot pin N extends. The latter is fitted within pivoted cars 15 formed. on the plates P, and by this arrangc-zment it will be clear that the shank S and the jaw J are supported for pivotal movement upon the stationary jaw J. The outer end of the shank S is enlarged to provide a handleH.

As clearly shown in Figure 2, the jaw J is relatively wide compared to the width of the shank S, and its working surface is serrated or formed with teeth 16 for the purpose of pivotally gripping a nut disposed within the stationary jaw J. The jaw J is normally itirged inwardly with respect to the jaw J by means of a leaf spring R secured to the shank S at one end by a screw 17 and bent outwardly from the shank so that its opposite and bears against the inner side of one end of the stationary jaw J. In the operation of the wrench, the stationary jaw J is arranged to surround the nut in the manner shown in Figure 2, the pivoted aw J being swung outwardly against the tension of the spring R so as to allow the ready insertion of the nut into the stationary jaw. l/Vhen the wrench has been properly associated with the nut, the aw J is released so that the spring acts to move the jaw into contact with one face of the nut. By gripping the handle H, and d awing the latter in a clockwise direction as when viewed in I igure 2, it will be clear that the pivoted jaw is forced inwardly against the out so that the two jaws cooperate to effectively grip the latter when turi'iing the wrench.
By virtue of the size and contour of the stationary jaw, and the pivotal mounting of the movable jaw, it will be manifest that the wrench will accommodate and operate nuts of different sizes and contours. Furthermore, the mounting of the pivoted jaw allows of the oscillation of the wrench, with the pivoted jaw disengaging the nut with each retiipgrade movement so that the necessity of continuously rotating is eliminated.
.Although 11 have herein shown and described only one form of wrench embodying my invention, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made herein without departing from the spirit of the invention or the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is:
A wrench comprising a U-shaped stationary jaw, plates spanning and secured to the free ends of the stationary jaw, a shank operating between and pivotally secured to the plates, a jaw fixed to the inner end of the shank and disposed wholly Within the stationary jaw, a handle integral with the outer end of the shank for operating the jaw carried thereby, and a bent blade spring having one end secured to the shank exteriorly of the stationary jaw and having its other end slidably engaging the stationary jaw between the plates whereby said spring urges the jaw carried by the shank inwardl of the stationary jaw.
