ADOLTPH .BANGERT AND FREDERICK MAY, OF NEW ORK, N.'Y.;. SAID FREDERICK MAY ASSIGNOR OF HIS ENTIRE RIGHT TO CHARLES MAY, or JERsEY CITY, NEW
JERSEY.
Application filed July. 18,
This invention relates to an improvement.
in combination tools. 1
The present invention has for its object the provision of a tool unit which, while combining the useful elements of various tools constantly required in automobile work, i
shall be simple in construction and opera tion, and therefore economicalm manufacture, durable, and highly efficient. The lI1-" vention aims, also, to provide a, novel wrench construction as a part of such tool unit which shall be capable of easy and quick adjustments to the largest and smallest parts in automobile work, and the construction of.
which wholly obviates the objectionable feature of give or yield in wrenches of ordinary construction.
Tith these and other objects in view, the invention in a preferred embodiment will now be described in detail in connection with the accompanying drawings, and the novel features thereof then be pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view of the complete tool unit;
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; and 'Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the tool members before assembly.
Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Fig. 1, the tool unit, combining the various tool elements hereinafter referred to, consists of two crossed members A, B pivoted at 10, so formed as to provide at one end of the tool jaws 1, 2 forming in effect a pair of pliers, and at the other end jaws 3, 4: of a wrench. One of the members,
as A, for instance, is formed with an arcuate or thickened portion 5 having notches 6 formed. on its outer or edge portion, the
latter being adapted to engage a bail or wRENcH.
1921. seriaina 485,611.
7 is preferably provided'with a notched inner edge for holding engagement with the notches 6, and such notchedsurface is curved as shown and so situate-d with respect to the" pivotal point of the bail or hook that the ralsed or thickened portion 5 and its curved surface will permit the wrench jaws to 60 open enclose as such bail is shifted from one end to the other of such curved notched In the extreme positions of adjustv surface.
ment of the bail, the jawsS, 4 of the wrench will be openedto their widest point or closed, as the case may be. WVhen it is desired to use only the pliers or the tool: ele
ments associated therewith, the bail-orhook 7 is readily swung entirely off of the member A. To facilitate adjustment and use of. the wrench and, pliers, a spring 8 is preferably mounted on either of the members. A or B, between them, with its free end normally pressing against'the other member and'tending to separate the wrench jaws and the pliers.
At a convenient point on the end of each,
of the wrench jaws 3and 4:, there-is preferably provideda screw-driver tip while on the inner sides of such members are pro- 1 "vided suitably formed cut-away portionsb for engagementwith an automobile radiator cap. The plier jaws also are formedwith pipe-engagingcut-away. portions e and wire cutters a Y While we have described the invention as particularly useful in automobile work, it v will be understood that it may be used in tool unit is desirable. It is also to be understood that various modifications inconstrucall classes of machinework where such a tions may be resorted to and-still" be within" the scopeof the claim.
What is claimed is:' g J The combination, in a combination wrench. of two crossed and pivoted members, pipewrench jaws formed at one end of said members, nut-wrench jaws formed at the opposite end of said members, the pivotalpoint of said members being near said pipe-wrench jaws, an arcuate surface formed ontheouter edge of one of said members near the nutthe notches onsaid arcuate surface, and a wrench jaws, and provided with notches on spring normally tending to separate said said surface, a bail pivotally secured to the pipe and nut rench jaws.
other of said members at a point eccentric In Witness whereof, We have hereunto to said'arcuatesurfaceand extending there-= signed our names.
overand having a plurality of: "notches ADOBPHl- BANGERT. formed on said bail and arranged toengage FREDERICK MAY.
