adapted to. receive the stem of a screw 31 for connecting the jaw 13 to the handle B, andthe operat ion ofwhich will be hereinafter morefully set forth. The fingers 22 I and 23 are provided upon their extreme forward ends with alining apertures 33. The handleB is provided with a pair of spaced lugs .34 and 35, upon theunder surface 36 of the gripping portion 20 and adjacent the enlargement 21. The space 37 intermediate the lugs 34 and 35 is'suflicient to freely accommodate the lug 17 upon the handle 12, and'said lugs 34 and 35 are provided with screw-threaded apertures 38, which are provided to aline with the aperture 19 in lug 17, when said lug 17 is interposed in the recess 37 This position is clearly shown in Fig. 6 of the'drawing. v i The jaw'C issubstantially L-shaped in formation, and includes the jaw proper 40 of the same width as the jaw 13, and having the article-gripping face 41. It is provided with an aperture 42 extendi ng transversely therethrough, and adapted to aline with the apertures 33 in the end of the fingers 22 and 23 respectively, to receive a screw or adjusting bolt-43, when the combination tool is used as a pair of pliers. The jaw 40 is reduced'rear'wardly thereof at 45, and is pro vided'with the upwardly projecting shank 46 integral with the'reduced portion 45, and theaxis of which shank 46 extends substantiallyat right'angles to the axis as defined by the jaw 40. The shank 46 is of special construction, and includes the flat sides 47 and 48 extending parallel with the run of the jaw 40; and which shank is provid'ed' uponthe forward and rear faces thereof with the screw-threads 49 and 50. The width of the shank 46 from flat 'side 47 to fiat side 48, is of course less than the distance from the screw-threads 49 to the sciew-threadshO, and which construction has been provided in orderto properly proportion certain details of the wrench, at the same timeconse'rving metal and providing suflicient strength in the adjustable parts.
The adjusting nut D. preferably circular in formation and of sufficient height to comfortably allow rotation thereof within the slot 28. Itis provided centrally thereof with the screw-threaded aperture'51 adapted to receive the screw-threads 49 and 50upon the shank"46 when the same are properly positioned for adjustment. The nut I) is of course greater in diameter than the thick ness of'the enlarged portion 21 of the handle B and when said nutis disposed within the slot 28 portions '52 willproject from each side thereof, adapting the same for engagementbythe fingers-of the userl The nut 1) may be nurled as at 53 upon the outer cir-j cunr'ference thereof for securing a better b In operation, to use the combinationtool as a pair of pliers, the fingers 22 and 23 of the handle B are properly positioned over the structure A in such manner that the'aperin the enlargement 15, whereby a screw 31 may be detachably inserted for providing a pivot upon which the structure A and handle B can be oscillated. When in this position, the extreme forward portions, and more specificallythose portions of the fingers 22 and 23 which contain the apertures-33 PI'Q? ject downwardly. and-forwardly from-the tu res therein aline with suitable'apertures structure A. The shank 46 of the jaw C is next inserted through the slot 16 in the structure A, and upwardly into the. vertical slot 25 in the enlargement 21. The adjusting nut D is properly inserted within the horizontal slot 28' in the handle Band 1:0
tated, to receive-the screw-threads 49 and i 50 upon the shank 46, whereupon said shank 46 will be fed upwardly through the vertical slot 25, anddue to the fact that the adjusting nut D- is securely retained within the slot 28, the jaw C will consequently, be rigidly locked in adjustable position with respect to the handle B.; As the adjusting nut D feeds the screw-threaded shank up wardly in the slot 25, the jaw proper-40will consequently be fed upwardly until the aperture 42*extending transversely there through, will aline with the aperture 33 in the fingers 22 and 23. When this position has beenreached thescrew 43is properly inserted to clamp the fingers 22 and 23' to the jaw proper 40, thus providing an additional structure A forming'a rigid jaw and handle as one element of the pliera'canbe pivoted upon the screw 31 to the handle B and'rigid jaw C forming the second element of: the
pliers. When used in this connection, as before stated, the pivoting action takesplace upon the screw bolt 31 and the faces 14-and 41 of the jaws 13 and 40 cooperate in the exact manner as an ordinary pair of pliers.
In the adaption of the combinationtool as a pair of pliers, the lugs 17 34 and .35, have no function whatsoever. a f f In order to adapt the combination tool for use as a wrench, it is merely necessary'to remove the clamping screw 43 from its loclu ing engagement with. respectto the fingers 22, 23 and the jaw 40 andthis screw 43 may then be positioned to tie-inserted through the apertures 19and 38,'o'f the lug- 17 and lugs 34 and 35 respectively. "This-operationhaving b een'efiected, the handle 12am the handle 13 are locked in'rigid and spaced relation to each other and provide a grip similar to the single grip 'upon an ordinary wrench.

The screw 43 need not, of course, necessarily be used for bindingthe lugs 17 and 34 and 35 together, since a second screw could be so utilized instead; The position, as described above for adapting the combination tool to use as a wrench is shown in Fig. 4, and it can be readily seen that in this position, the nut D can be rotated within the slot 28 for feeding the shank 46 upwardly or downwardly in its slot or aperture 25, and in this manner the faces 14 and 41 of the jaws 13 and 40 can be moved to and from each other. When the jaws of the wrench are properly adjusted to receive a bolt, nut, or other article, it can readily be seen that due to the rigid locked position of the handles .13 and 12, the force applied to the article being worked upon will be effectively applied thereto due to transmission of said force directly into the jaws 13 and 40 in their rigid mechanically clamped position. This feature is highly important, since when the combination tool is adapted for use as a wrench, clamping action of the jaws is independent of move ment of the handles D and 12. i
The slot or opening 16 and the surface 55 adjacent the jaw proper 40 and reduced portion 45 of the jaw C, together with the inner surface of the handle B intermediate the 1 fingers 22 and 23, are sufficient in design and formation to accommodate movement of the jaws and various parts of the combination tool, in adapting the same for use as a pair of pliers or as a wrench. i v
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts, may be made to the form of invention herein shown and dedescribed, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
