Application filed December 18, 1920.1 Serial No. 431,661.
T 0 all to 7mm it may concern, i
Be it known that D, JOHN T. MORRISSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lincoln, in the. county. of Lancaster andv State of. Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a .Spud- Tool, of which the following is a specification. e V The invention relates to a tool, and more particularly to the class of spud tools of the plier type.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the work engaging jaws thereof are constructed and arranged to fit within plugs or spuds so that the latter canbe worked home to proper position or removed as the occasion may require, the tool being adaptable particularly for use by plumbers and will firmly grip the plug or spud, and in the use thereof will avoid any damage to the article or part with which the spud or plug is enga ed. I
Znother object of the invention is the provision of a tool of this character, wherein the work engaging aws thereof are formed on pivotally connected levers, which permit the manual adjustment of the jaws to firmly grip the work and on engagement ofthe latter, the levers can be locked, thereby elim-' inating the separation of the tool from the work and also permitting easy manipulation for the insertion of a spud or plug or the removal thereof.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a-tool of this character, wherein the construction and arrangement thereof, adapts the same particularly for use in inserting or removing spuds or plugs and to engage the latter interiorly thereof in contra-dlstinction to the outside of the same, the spud or plug being firmly gripped by the tool during the operation of inserting or removing the same. I
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in theclaims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a tool constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the levers in open position.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, taken only through one of the engaging jaws.
-Fig. 4. is a fragmentary side'viewsliowing a spud engaged by the tool. 1
Similar reference characters indicate cor-- responding parts throughout the several VlGWS in the drawings;
Referring to the drawing in detail:
The tool comprises a pair of swinging levers 5 and 6, respectively, formed with pivot ears 7 disposed in overlapped relation and receiving a pivot 8 which swingingly connects the levers 5 and 6 together.
The levers 5 and 6 slightly forward of the pivot ears 7 are formed with work engaging jaws 9, bent at right angles to said levers and disposed in opposed relation t each other, the jaws 9 on their outer surfaces being longitudinally ribbed or serrated to provide gripping faces 10. The jaws 9 are of the required length and are adapted to separate from each other on swinging the levers 5 and 6 toward one another so that when the jaws 9 are inserted in a spud 11 illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the gripping faceslO will engage and bite into the inner surfaces of the said spud for firmly gripping the same, whereby the said spud can be turned or its locking nut 12, conveniently removed.
Formed on the lever 5, at the outside thereof atits free end, is a keeper 13, having the series of spaced transverse notches 14, opening through the outer face thereof, while the lever 6 at its free end is formed with an eye 15, in which is loosely engaged a latching bail or link 16, the same being adapted to ride over the keeper 13, for en-- gagement in any one of the notches 14 there- 1n, so as to hold the levers locked when the jaws 9 have been spread apart the required distance to positively engage the spud or-a removable plug interiorly thereof.
The ribs 10 forming the gripping face of each jaw assures a positive hold upon the work to prevent the slipping of the tool when engaged therewith.
' What is claimed is:
1. A tool of the character described comrising'two pivotally connected levers havmg overlapplng ears formed adjacent their ends, said levers being disposed on opposite sides of the pivot and provided with angular gripping jaws at the extreme ends thereof presenting outer gripping surfaces, and
Specification of Letters Patent. P t t d Au 23, 1 1 Y means for locking the opposite free ends of said levers in their operative position v 2. A tool of the character described comprising two complementary, pivotally connected levers having overlapping ears formed adjacent their ends, said levers being disposed on opposite sides ofth'e pivot and provided with angular serrated gri p ping jaws at the extreme ends thereof presenting outer gripping surfaces arranged in proximity and at right angles to said ears and adjustable means for locking the opposite free ends of said levers when the jaws are moved to their operatively, engaged position.
3. A tool of the character described comprising two complementary, pivotally conand provided with angular serratedgrip ping jaws at the extreme ends thereof presentlngouter gripping surfaces arranged in proxlmity and at right angles to saidears, and adapted to be moved relative to each other for cooperative engagement with a part to be actuated, a keeper carried by the free opposite end of one of said levers'and a latching bar carried bythe: free opposite end of the'other of said levers and engageable with the keeper.
In testimony whereof I aflixiny signature hereto.
