Description
Patented Dec. 28, 1926.
'l t? lil Ei MRRLS FIENBERG, F RUTLAND, VERMONT.
`WRENCL Application filed. July 3, 182.` Serial No. 120,391.
The Object of this invention is the provision of a wrench for use in close places which are inaccessible to ordinary wrenches, and in which pivot-ally supported slidably mounted jaws are arranged upon a head that has a swivel joint connection with a shank, the latter l'iaving pivoted handles associated therewith and whereby the head and jaws may be swung' and sustained at any desired angle with respect to the shank so that the head and jaws may be freely turned by the operator, and also wherein the construction is such as to permit ot the parts cinistitutingY the same being folded one against the other to provide a small compact package for storage or conveyance when the device is not required for use.
To the attainment of the foregoing broadly stated object and many others which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, the improvement resides in certain novel features of construction, combination and operative association of parts, a satisfactory embodiment of which is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and form part of this application.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a side elevation ot a wrench in accordance with this invention, parts being broken away and parts being in section.
.Figure 2 is a view looking at right angles to that shown by Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional view approximately on the line 3-3 oit Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an end view looking toward the jaws, one oi the latter being in section.
In carrying out my invention I make use of a shank 1 that has its sides, at its outer end, provided with lugs 2, and pivoted to each of these lugs there is a handle member 3. The handle members are hollow at the portions thereoil through which the pivots pass so that the same will contact with the outer edges oit the lugs 2 for holding the handle members at a right angle with respect to the shank. Obviously the handle members may be swung against the shank when not in use.
The inner end of the shank 1 is widened and bifurcated, and pivotally secured between the arms thus provided there are the oppositely disposed arms 5 of a cross member 6. The second and outstanding," pair of arms 7 of the said cross member have pivotally secured thereto the arms 8 on the biturcated end of a substantif/illy tri-shaped member 9. The outer or lower arms ot the H-member 9 have pivoted therebetween one pair of arms ot a cross member or coupling 10, similar to the cross member or coupling,` 6. The second pair of arms of the cross member 10 have pivoted thereto arms 11 on the bifurcated end of a head 12. The outer or free end or the head is centrally 'formed with a web extension 13 and passing centrally through this web there is a pivot 14 whose opposite ends are headed.
Each ot the jaws 15 are ot substantially if-shape in cross section, the inner and active faces of the said jaws being1 toothed or serrated, as at 16. Each jaw has an offset end formed with a lateral extension 17 which is slotted, as at 18. The angle end 17 of the respective jaws are disposed against the opposite `faces of the web 13, the pivot 1a passing through the openings 18 in the said flanges. j The jaws 15 have each a central aligning' opening` therethrough, but the openings in the respective jaws are provided with opposite hand pitched threads Jfor engagement with the right and left hand threads on a screw member 19. The screw has centrally fixed thereon a knurled operating head 20.
Vith my improvement it will be noted that the jaws 15 are both pivotally and longitudinally mounted on the head so that the turning` of the screw 19 will move both of the jaws in timed relation either toward or away from each other. By providing the swivel joint connection between the head and the shank it will be noted that the head and consequently the jaws may be arranged at any desired angle with respect to the shank with the result that the wrench can be given complete turns when the jaws engage nuts on bolts in places which are inaccessible to ordinary wrenches. It .will be further noted that the swivel connection between the head. and shank is such as to permitot these parts being folded against the shank when the device is not in use, it being previously stated that the handles arc swingable against the sides ot the shank so that the construction as a whole may be reduced to a small package when not required for use.
HavingT described the invention, claim 1. A. wrench of the class described, comprising,` a shank having lugs on the end thereof, a handle member pivotally secured to each lug, a head, a swivel joint connection betweenl the head and` shank, said head having a central outstanding web, a pair of jaws which are substantially V-shaped in cross section and whichzhavetheir inner and active faces roughened, each of said jaws having an offset end formed with an angle extension which is slotted and which extensions are arranged against the opposite faces of the web, a headed pivot passing through the slots in the saidI extensions and through the web. and a right and' left hand screw having a central head threaded through the respective jaws.
2. A wrench for the purpose set forth, comprising a shank, handle members pivot ally secured to the outer end of the shank and the opposite end of the shank being bifurcated, a cross member havingtwor of its' arms pivoted inA the bifurcatedl end of the shank, a substantially HL-shaped member having two or it's arms pivotally secured to the second pair of arms'of the crossmember, a secondi cross member having two of its arms pivoted) to the a-rms at the second end of the H-shaped casting, a head having a. bifurcated end whose arms are pivoted to the remaining arms or" the last mentioned cross shaped member, said head comprising a member having its outer end centrally formed with a web, a pair of jaws, each of which are substantially V-shaped in cross section and which have their inner and active faces serrated', each of said jaws having an offset end provided with a lateral flange extension which is slotted, said extensions being arranged on the opposite 4faces of the web, a double headed pivot passing through the slotted extensions and through the web, a screw member having a central head which is roughened and which has oppositely pitched threads extending from the head and the jaw members provided with opposite pitched threads for engagement with the screw.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature.
MOR-RIS FIENBERG.
