` E. BUTTEREIELn, lAND' GEORGE "Hi Application filed February 15, 1924. Serial No. 693,063.
To all whom t 01mg/ concern.'
Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. TULL j and ROY J. BRIsToL,-citizens of the vUnited States, residing at Stanton, in they county of Stanton and State ofNebraska, `have invented new and useful Improvements in of which the following is a specification.
The object? of our said invention is thev `provision of a wrench of pliers type embodying such construction that the wrench is susceptible of ready adjustment and is highly efiicient and reliable in use and at the same time convenient to handle.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecificationzj Figure l is a side elevation of our preferred form of wrench.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of `the wrench.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view illustrative of the connection between the handles. j
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements our novel wrench comprises a handle l with an integral toothed jawk 2 at its forward end and an enlargement 3 at the inner side of its rear or heel end.` It will also be noted that the said handle l is provided at a point adjacent to the jaw ,2 with a slot 4.
The wrench also comprises a movable jaw 5, a handle 6, a nut 7 and links rods 8, said lilik rods 8 being threaded into said nut. .The handle Gis provided with a lateral intermediate projection 9 to bring up against the inner edge of the handle l.
As illustratedthe jaw 5 is toothed at 10,
` is pivotally connected at 11 to the handle 6 and is provided with a hook-like arm 12,
y the said arm 12 being disposed and mov also, the said link rods 8 are reversely threaded to engage the corresponding threads in the end portions of the nut 7 which latter is intended to be turned about its axis and is therefore exteriorly of angular form in cross-section.
Manifestly by adjusting the nut 7 on the linkrods 8 the engaging face of the jaw 5 can be readily moved away from and toward the engaging face of the jaw 2, and it will also be vnoted that the adjustable positioning of the nut 7 on the link rods 8 will adjustably yiix the two jaws with respect to each other so as to adapt the wrench to take safe hold of an` article that is in position between the engaging faces of the jaws.
As illustrated the projection 9 meets withV handle l immediately after handle 6, in
ening their grip, thereby causing them to firmly lock Von an article that is in position between the engaging faces of the jaws.
Notwithstanding the practical advantages of our novel wrench as pointed out in the foregoing it will be manifest that the wrench is simple and inexpensive in construction and is well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which wrenches are 0rdinarily subjected.
We have entered into a detailed dscription of the construction and relative arrangement of parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of our invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. We
do not desire, however, to be understood as confining ourselves to the specific construcf tion and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch asin the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope of our invention as defined in our appended claim.
Having described our invention, what We claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A wrench comprising a handle having an integral jaw at its forward end and an enlargement on its inner side at its rear end and also having a slot kslightly in rear of said jaw, a second jaw having a hook-like arm disposed and movable in the said slot,
a handle pivotallyconnected to the secondnamed jaw and Vextending rearwardly 'therefrom in spaced relation to the-firstnamedl .handle and having Yan intermediate enlargementat its inner side, a link rod pivotally connected to the rear enlargement on the first-named handle, a link rod pivotally connected to the enlargement 0n the other handle; said link rods reversely threaded, anda nut haring rerersely natures.
