Abstract

1,180,220. Hand-tool handles. WARD & PAYNE Ltd. 21 Feb., 1968 [15 Dec., 1966; 8 Feb., 1967], Nos. 56110/66 and 6015/67. Heading B4K. A handle for a gardening tool, e.g. rake, hoe &c. having a shank with an end of non-circular section, comprises a collet at one end of the handle, the end of the handle having a recess for receiving the end of the shank such that relative rotation between the handle and tool head is prevented. The tubular handle 4 has a spigot 6 (Fig. 1) secured therein by adhesive and defines a non-circular recess 6c. The collet 8, which may be secured about the spigot by adhesive, has an externally threaded portion adjacent the spigot and provides resilient fingers 20. A locking nut 10 screws on to the collet and urges the fingers 20 to grip the shank 2 of the tool when inserted in the handle. Alternatively, the spigot is externally screw-threaded (Fig. 6) and has an internal tapered bore, and a locking nut or collet in which resilient fingers 26 are mounted is screwed on to the spigot whereby the tapered bore urges the spring fingers to grip the shank of the tool when inserted in the handle. The collet 8 may be of steel or plastics, and the fingers 26 may be of plastics.
