A plastics handle a for a hammer or like eyed tool is adapted to be attached to the tool head by providing a tapered cavity b in which there is introduced a tapered expansion member such as a truncated cone e of metal or other hard material through which a screw passes and is screwed into a female screw socket d moulded into the plastics material. The cone e expands the end of the handle a locking it to the head of the tool. The base of the expansion member may be elliptical, trapezoidal or of other shape. In a modification a handle is attached to the head of a hatchet having a bore in the form of a collar of circular cross-section, the expansion member having a circular base.
