Abstract

1,008,378. Screwing up tool. LOK-FAST Inc. June 17, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No 23956/63. Heading B3N. [Also in Division F2] A screwing up tool comprises inner and outer wrenches, one telescoped within the other, means for holding one of the wrenches against rotation, and means for transmitting rotation to the other, comprising parts relatively movable axially, and having limited relative rotary movement. The tool for driving a blind bolt assembly G, comprises a stationary casing A attached to an air-operated drill B, a nut holding wrench C screwed into the casing, a torque-responsive drive transmitting assembly D driven by the drill, and a bolt holding wrench F detachably secured to assembly D. Assembly D comprises a sleeve 31 having a blind bore, a pilot pin 34, and a clutch jaw 33 for engagement with jaws 47 of the drive, to form a lost motion arrangement. Rotatably mounted in sleeve 31 is a clutch shaft 35 pinned to wrench F at 53, and having a pin 37. Projecting into helical slots 38 in sleeve 31, the shaft being urged towards the fastener by a spring 39. Wrench F comprises a sleeve 50 rotatably and axially slidable in wrench C, a socket 51 having flat sides for engagement with flats on the stem 13 of the bolt 12 having a left-hand thread, and a spring urged ejector 54. In operation with nut 14, bolt 12, and a deformable member 15 inserted into members H, the wrenches C, F are engaged with the nut and bolt respectively. Nut 14 is held stationary and bolt 12 is drawn through the nut by rotating wrench F, until member 15 is deformed, whereupon the excess part of the bolt is snapped off. During the axial movement of the bolt the counter-thrust of the tool is taken up by the movement of shaft 35 in sleeve 31 allowed by pin 37. In a modification, ejector 54 is omitted and the wrench F has a blind bore. In a still further modification, Fig. 6, the tool has an angled drive instead of an in-line drive, using gears 60, the clutch drive being omitted and the sleeve 31 having a pair of slots 62 communicating with helical slots 38<SP>1</SP> to provide the lost motion.
