Abstract

692,879. Free-wheel clutches; apicyclic gearing. S.S.S. GEARS, Ltd. Oct. 4, 1951 [Oct. 27, 1950], No. 26298/50. Class 80 (ii). A one way clutch, comprising an intermediate member 1 helically splined on a shaft 2, may be locked, for the transmission of torque in either direction, by plungers 13 which project through radial holes 12 in a sleeve 10 attached to the shaft 2. The plungers engage a circumferential groove 11 in the member 1 and are projected into the operative position by a sleeve 14. When a, circumferential groove 15 in the sleeve 14 is disposed opposite holes 12 the plungers 13 may be moved outwardly by the member 1 in moving to its disengaged position. In this position pawls 6 overrun teeth 4 on the coupling member 3. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), two locking plungers serve alternatively to prevent the intermediate member of an invertible free wheel coupling from moving out of the engaged position into one of its free-wheeling positions while allowing it to move into the other free-wheeling position. The plungers 13 may have rounded ends, be balls (if the sleeve 10 is thin enough), or have flat inner ends in which case they are disengaged by centrifugal force. Fig. 3 shows the coupling applied to an epicyclic gear in which teeth 53 on an intermediate member 51 are movable from engagement with teeth 46 on a planet carrier 42 (one to one drive) into engagement with stationary teeth 50 (reduced drive). Locking plungers 63, 64 engage alternately a groove 59 or shoulder on a reduced portion 60 of the member 51 to lock the gear in its reduced drive position or to prevent it from moving into the reduced drive position from the direct drive position. The member 51 is helically splined on the sun shaft 48 and in its intermediate position sets of pawls 54, 55 ratchet over the teeth 46, 50. Specifications 354,711, 410,083 and 486,589 are referred to.
