Abstract

1384532 Positive clutches FLUIDRIVE ENG CO Ltd 20 Jan 1972 [27 Jan 1971] 3332/71 Heading F2C The synchronous self-shifting clutch shown comprises an input shaft 1 having a sleeve 3 on which an intermediate member 8 of the clutch is helically splined and movable to engage or dis-engage pawl and ratchet 24, 21, this member 8 having spline teeth 9 which engage with teeth 5 of the output member 4, and a baulking member 30, also helically splined to the sleeve 3 which by means of a cam surface can engage and move radial tappets 38 which in turn pivot pawls 24 of member 8 so that they cannot engage ratchet teeth 21 of the output member 4. The baulk member 30 itself has two sets of pawls (in opposite directions) which can engage teeth 47 of the output member 4 the arrangement being such that the pawl and ratchet 24, 21 are prevented from engaging when the direction of relative rotation between input and output would cause damage to them. Acontrol member 11 is provided which can lock the intermediate member in position (splines 13 and 14 in engagement, the member 11 and 8 being coupled by splines 15), or move it axially (abutment 18 engaging abutments on member 11). Operation.-The operation of the baulk member 30 is such that with member 4 rotating faster than member 1 the pawls and ratchet 21, 24 may be engaged, but with member 4 moving slower the pawls 45 cause the member 30 to move left to its baulking position (pawls 47 moving it back on reversal of this situation), to prevent engagment of pawls 24 and ratchet 21. With the pawl and ratchet engaged the clutch (teeth 5 and 9), engages by movement on the helical splines of sleeve 3 on change of direction of relative motion of members 1 and 4, and may be locked in this condition by member 11.
