1,197,909. Power operated wheel chair. R. R. RABJOHN. 3 July, 1967, No. 30488/67. Heading B7H. A power-operated wheel chair comprises a conventional wheel chair having a front wheel replaced by a motor drive and control assembly 20, the lower part of the assembly 20 consisting of a housing 22 formed with a cylinder 32 which contains a motor 44 driven by a battery 14, and a traction wheel 42 is rotatable on the outer surface of cylinder 32 and driven by the motor via pulleys 70, 72 with a belt 74 and sprockets 40, 56 with chain 58, the pulley 70 and sprocket 56 being mounted on a shaft 54. The housing is rigid with a shaft 86 which passes up through a tube 152 by which the assembly is fixed to the chair by clamp 18. The shaft 86 is axially movable within tube 152 against a spring 146 but is axially rotatable by means of a handle 204 to steer the chair. A resistor in the form of carbon discs is mounted within a bore in housing 22 and the current to motor 44 is varied by compressing the discs. Lever 172 associated with handle 204 is connected by a cable passing through shaft 86 with a spring lever on which the carbon discs are mounted. Movement of lever 172 in direction F causes the discs to be compressed together thereby increasing the current to motor 44. After a preselected movement of lever 172 the resistor is shorted and the motor receives full power.
