Abstract
440,511. Centrifugal honey-extractors. BURTT, E. G., 22, Stroud Road, Gloucester. Oct. 3, 1934, No. 28361. [Class 23] The cage or carrier 14 for the combs in a honey-extractor is rotated by means of a handle 10 through skew gearing in the casing 5 mounted on the cross beam 7 at the top of the barrel 8. The toothed pinion 1 on the spindle 2 gears with the worm 3 which can slide and rotate on its spindle 4<a>. A slot in the lower end of this spindle rests over a cross pin at the upper end of the spindle 4 of the carrier 14. The beam 7 has slots 11 near its ends to pass over studs on the brackets 12 so that the beam can be secured by wing nuts. When the handle is turned in one direction, the worm 3 is rotated and depressed so that ratchet teeth on its lower end engage similar teeth on a collar 17 fixed to the spindle 4a thereby coupling the carrier 14 to the gear. When the handle is released, the worm moves upwards to disengage the coupling, and the carrier rotates with a freewheel action. If the handle is rotated in the opposite direction, the worm is lifted and its upper end engages a collar 18 on the spindle, thus forming a friction brake. A spring may be employed to assist the worm to move to its normal position.
