341,715. Turning gear. ECLIPSE AVIATION CORPORATION, 545, North Arling- ton Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A. Jan. 20, 1930, No. 1965. Convention date, Jan. 30, 1929. [Class 7 (v).] In hand- or motor-operated starting- mechanism for aeroplane engines &c., a casing 10 is secured with rotary adjustment upon the engine casing 14 and is closed by a cover 16, lateral oblique extensions 20 on the casing and cover carrying a pinion 23 with inclined teeth engaging a wheel 36 on a barrel 34 mounted concentrically in the casing. The barrel is frictionally connected by a coupling 45, 46, adjustable between a screwed sleeve 49 and springs 47, to a sleeve 44 carrying lugs 51 for engaging the engine and normally retracted by a spring 58. A spring collar 52, Fig. 3, frictionally engages the sleeve 44 and has an inclined slot 53 engaging a screw 54 in the casing, so that when the pinion 23 is rotated in the forward direction, by the engagement of hand-crank or motor driving-means with its end 26, the sleeve 44 is projected to engage with the engine, returning automatically when the engine starts. Damage to the operator when backfiring occurs is prevented by the use of a spring- pressed non-rotatable ratchet ring 42 engaging a similar ring 40 on the side of the wheel 36, the coupling 45, 46 slipping during such action.
