Abstract

204,808. Klopper, A. C. July 20, 1922. Gear-operated wrenches.-A wrench is provided with a nut-engaging member mounted in a casing so that it can be moved longitudinally into two positions, in one of which it is free to be rotated by gearing and in the other it is locked to the casing to allow the wrench to be used as an ordinary rigid wrench. The nut socket 19 is fixed to a shaft 16 slidable longitudinally in a casing 2 into two positions, in one of which an angular portion 17 of the shaft engages a similarly shaped recess 20 in the casing to look the shaft against rotation and in the other, the portion 17 is clear of the recess and is retained by a spring catch 26 engaging a groove 23 in the shaft. In the latter position the shaft 16 may be rotated by a handle 5 through shaft 4, bevel gears 10, 8, shaft 6 and bevel gears 9, 14, the shaft 6 being mounted in a tubular arm 1 which extends from the casing 2 and is connected by an elbow piece 2<1> with a sleeve 3 supporting the shaft 4.
