Abstract
520,963. Torque-Indicating wrenches. GOSSLING, C. E., and SMALL ELECTRIC MOTORS, Ltd. Nov. 4, 1938, No. 32041. [Class 61(iii)] [Also in Group XIX] A torque indicating wrench comprises a body 13 in which is rotatably mounted a bevel gear 15 in one piece with a nut engaging socket 16 and meshing with another bevel' gear 17 carried by a rotatably mounted boss 18 having a square socket to receive the square end of a torque rod 19 housed within a strong tube 10 and having its other end 33 held against rotation in either or both directions by ratchet mechanism comprising sliding sleeves 34, 35 carrying ratchet rings 36, 37, co-operating ratchet rings in the part 43 and plug 42, and reversing sleeve 40, the torque on the rod 19 when pressure is applied to a nut being indicated by a fixed pointer 30 and scale on a disc 28 moving with a spindle 22 and pinion 21 in gear with a spur wheel 20 secured to the gear wheel 15. The ratchet may be connected to the tool through an adjustable-pressure friction clutch so that the drive of the tool is released when a predetermined torque is reached and a warning device in 'circuit with electric contacts may be provided to warn the operator if a safe load is about to be exceeded.
