Abstract

612,904. Frictional lighters. LOWENTHAL, J., and MOORE, C. W. June 5, 1946, No. 17115. [Class 75 (iii)] [Also in Group XXV] In a frictional lighter an operating wheel 23 turns a cam 28 to release a spring-pressed catch retaining the cover 13 in its closed position. A plate 16, slidable on the top of the lighter, carries a hook 18 and is guided by a retaining plate 17, a downwardly projecting part 31 of which fits into a cut-away portion 32 of the plate 16. A cam 28 on an extension of the operating wheel 23 engages an edge 30 of the plate 16 so that manual rotation of the operating wheel 23 displaces the plate 16 against the action of a spring 20 to release the spring actuated cover 13 from the hook 18. The operating wheel 23 rotates about a hollow spindle 24 through which the wick passes. A spring-pressed pawl 36, slidably mounted on the cover 13, engages ratchet teeth on the friction wheel.
