[Class 75 (iii).] In a pocket lighter in which a wick-cap carrier 2, which actuates the friction wheel 10, is mounted on the same pivot 9 as the latter and is operated by a rocking member 6 which engages with it and which is pivoted on a separate spindle, the rocking member 6 is in the form of a casing which partly encloses the carrier and is provided at one end with an opening through which the carrier 2 can pass. Pivotally connected at 18 with the carrier 2 is the forked head 17 of the rod 16 which slides in a bore in a transverse member 20. The latter is pivoted, together with the rocker 6, on pins 21 which screw into the member 20, and forms an abutment for the spring 19, which presses the rod outwardly. In the closed position shown, the pivot 18 lies above the dead-centre position with respect to the pivot 9, and holds the carrier so that the wick-cap rests on its seat. When the end 22 of the rocker 6 is depressed, the carrier 2 is engaged by the projections 8 on the rocker and is thereby rotated until the pivot 18 is past the dead-centre position, when the spring 19 expands and opens the carrier rapidly. A spring-pressed pawl 14, mounted on the carrier 2, engages ratchet teeth in the side of the wheel 10 and rotates the latter. A spring pressing on the other side of the wheel holds it in position. The lighter is closed by depressing the carrier 2.
