Abstract
577,847. Pocket lighters. LOWENTHAL, B. Nov. 2, 1944, No. 21499. [Class 75 (iii)] In a pyrophoric lighter, the abrasive wheel 12 is turned by the engagement of a rack 34 with a ratchet 13 fixed on the same spindle 14 as the abrasive wheel 12. When the operative member 20 is depressed into a recess 27 against the action of a spring 23, a lever 28 turns about a pivot 29 fixed to the casing, causing the rack 34 to rise and rotate the ratchet 13, with which it is kept in contact by a spring 35. The depression of the member 20 also causes a head 16, resting on inwardly projecting ledges 18, to turn about a pivot 19 to an approximately vertical position, thus raising a V-shaped wickcap 17. An apertured screen is provided between the abrasive wheel and the wick to prevent excess fuel from wetting the wheel.
