Abstract
684,904. Frictional lighters. KNIGHT, N. W. Oct. 4, 1951 [May 15, 1951], No. 11241/51. Class 75(iii) In a frictional lighter depression of a thumb-operated sleeve 1 slidable on a plunger 2 operatively connected to the igniting mechanism and normally pressed against a catch slide 11 by a helical spring 3 housed in the sleeve results in compression of said spring and eventually displaces the catch slide so that the plunger 2 under the action of the previously compressed spring operates the friction wheel. The lower end of the plunger 2 passes through a collar 10 and normally rests on the spring-urged catch slide 11 which is supported by a further collar 12, the collars and slide being kept in place by a spring 14. On depressing a thumb piece 4 at the top of the sleeve 1 the spring 3 is compressed and a rod 16 connected to the thumb piece eventually passes through holes in the collars and slide, pressing the latter back against its spring to align a hole 15 therein with the plunger which is thereupon forced downwards through the slide and collar 12 by the compressed spring. The ends of a pin 8 which passes through the plunger 2 and through opposed slots 9 in the sleeve 1 are engaged by links 7 which connect the plunger to a wick cap carrier 6, the latter being provided with the usual pawl for rotating a ratchet wheel fixed to the friction wheel. The parts are returned to their initial positions by the spring 14.
