Abstract

739,940. Pyrophoric lighters. NATIONALE SOC. ANON. Feb. 23, 1954 [July 17, 1953], No. 5250/54. Class 75 (3). In a liquefied gaseous fuel lighter in which fuel passes to the burner through a porous material which is compressed by a tightening device to adjust the fuel supply, the porous material is located in a guide tube against a resilient support which yields under the action of the tightening device in such a manner as to slide the porous material in the guide tube to obtain a uniform compression in the material. The porous material 17 is shown located within a resilient tube 18 mounted in the guide tube 5. The tube 18 which may be of artificial rubber fits at one end on a spigot 21 of an axially movable member 22 and at the other end over the end of and against a spring- loaded collar 19 mounted on a tube 16. The compression of the porous material 17 and the resilient tube 18 is effected by rotating a member 31 rotatably mounted on the upper end of the tube 5 and attached to a washer 28 having a D-shaped hole 29 engaging a D-shaped portion of a screwed member 10. The member 10 on being rotated compresses the porous material 17 and the resilient tube 18 between the member 22 and the collar 19. The burner 11 carries a plug 27 of resilient material which closes a fuel passage 23 in the member 22 when the burner 11 is moved downwards by closing the lighter. A cotton or nylon wick 32 located in the tube 16 feeds liquefied fuel to the porous material 17, The initial compression of the porous material 17 and resilient tube 18 is effected by a screwed plug 15. The porous material 17 may comprise asbestos, cotton or nylon. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the resilient tube 18 is omitted and the compressible porous material 17 fills the space between the member 22 and the collar 19.
