Abstract
673,822. Pyrophoric lighters. NATIONALE SOC. ANON. Dec. 1, 1948 [Feb. 12, 1948], No. 31101/48. Class 75(iii) A wickless pyrophoric lighter with valve device to control the fuel delivery from a reservoir mounted in the lighter body to the lighter flame has the valve device provided as a deformable tubular fuel passage connecting the burner to the reservoir with such tube permanently flattened at at least one point between its ends so that its cross-sectional area can be adjusted or further restricted by an actuating member deforming the flattened portion. A fuel tank 8 is formed with a tube 11 deformed at 12 to reduce the cross-section at that point of the passage 9 therein. A screwed stop 13 operating against a spring-loaded plunger 14 deflects the end of the tube 11 from the vertical to alter the cross-sectional area of the passage 9 at the point 12. A cam 16 deflects the tube 11 to close the passage 9 when cover 2 is shut. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the tube 11 has a plurality of bends giving at the bends a number of deformed portions 12 the crosssection of the passage 9 at these points being adjusted by screwing up a plug 18 against a collar 17 formed on the tube 11; a spring may press the collar 17 against the plug 18. A pusher abutment 21 on the cover presses on the end of the tube 11 to close the passage 9 at the points 12 when the cover is closed. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the tube 11 is twisted as shown at 11c and when the cover 2 is open the crosssectional area of the passage 9 is adjusted by rotating a toothed flange 27 by a screw 28 which is slidably and rotatably mounted in guides 29, 30 and the end of which operates with a screwed nut 31 attached to the cover 2 by arms 32 so that upon closure of the cover 2 the screw 28 is slid to the right to rotate the toothed flange 27 and hence close the passage 9. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the deformed walls 12 are forced apart by a pointed needle 50 passing down the passage 9. The tube 11 may be of metal, rubber or other resilient material, or may be lined with a resilient material softer than that from which the tube is made. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also an arrangement, Fig. 5 (Cancelled) wherein the tube 11 has a deformable sleeve 11c in which the cross-sectional area of the passage 9 therein varied by operating a screw 26 to press a member 23, attached to a rod 24 pivoted at 25, against the side of the sleeve 11c. A capillary tube 26 is also passed down the passage 9 to convey fuel from the container 8 to the lighter flame when the fuel in the container is not under pressure. In a further modification, Fig. 8 (Cancelled) a resilient member 36, which rests on a support 34 and is arranged within the bore of a tube 33 to leave an annular space 35 between its outer surface and the tube bore, is deformed by the pressure exerted by a nut 18 on a collar 17 attached to a tube 38 to vary the crosssectional area of the annular passage 35. A pusher abutment 21 attached to a cover presses on the end of rod 38 to close the annular passage 35 when the cover is shut. In a still further modification, Fig. 9 (Cancelled) a sleeve 46 fitted over the end of a stepped tube 43, 44, is deformed between a shoulder 48 and an annular abutment 47 on the interior of a tube 49 to vary the cross-sectional area of the annular passage formed between the bore of the sleeve 46 and the outer surface of the reduced portion 44 of the tube 43, 44. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
