In a liquefied gas lighter comprising a member 6 adapted to apply pressure to a wick 7 soaked in liquefied gas and means for moving the pressuremember 6 relative to the body 1 of the lighter to vary the supply of gas to the burner, the pressuremember 6 has a surface 20 inclined to a surface 21 of the body 1 and movable elements, for instance balls 22, are placed between the inclined surfaces 20, 21 and are operated by an operating member 16 so that a movement of the balls 22 produces a movement of the pressure member 6 relative to the body 1. The operating member 16 is screwed into the body 1 and has a conical surface 19 engaging the balls 22. The pressure member 6 is returned in an upward direction by a resilient joint 13 disposed between conical surfaces on the pressure member 6 and the body 1. The lower end of the pressure member 6 has an aperture 10 for the flow of gas from the wick 7 to the burner and the flow therethough is controlled by a resilient pad 12 on the end of a rod 11 extending upwards through the pressure member 6 and the operating member 16. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the surface 20 of the pressure member 6 is planar and the inclined surface 21 is formed on the lower end of a sleeve which is threaded into the body 1 and into which the operating member 16 screws. A rapid adjustment of the pressure member 6 can be made by screwing the sleeve in or out of the body 1. In another modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the balls 22 are replaced by pusher-rods which pass through holes in the body 1. The inner ends of the rods abut an inclined surface on the pressure member 6 and the outer ends of the rods abut an inclined internal surface on an operating member screwed on to the outside of the body 1. Instead of rods or balls wedges may be used.
