942,023. Pyrophoric lighters. THORENS S.A. Feb. 24, 1961 [March 4, 1960], No. 6891/61. Heading F4F. An actuating mechanism for the friction wheel 1 of a pyrophoric lighter comprises an actuating lever 17 connected to a driving lever 30 which operates a spring-loaded tumbler device driving a stirrup 8 coupled to the friction wheel 1 by a one-way coupling 9. The stirrup 8 and the actuating lever 17 are pivotally mounted together with the friction wheel 1 on a screw 5. The tumbler device comprises a coupling element 11 pivotally connected at one end to the stirrup 8 by pins 12, 13 and slidably mounted at the other end on a pin 16 on the lever 17. A coil spring 27 within the coupling element 11 abuts the pin 16 and a pin 28 secured to the element 11. The driving lever 30 is pivoted on a pin 25 and has parallel arms 31, 32 formed with fingers 41, 42 for engagement with the ends of the pin 28. When the actuating lever is depressed against the action of a spring 22, a pin 35 engaging slots 33, 34 rotates the driving lever 30, whereupon the fingers 41 engage the pin 28 to cause anticlockwise rotation of the stirrup 8 and compression of the coil spring 27. When the pins 12, 13 pass through an equilibrium position the spring 27 extends to rotate the stirrup 8 and the friction wheel 1 rapidly. The spring 22 restores the mechanism to its initial position when the actuating lever 17 is released. A pyrophoric stone 36 is pressed against the friction wheel 1 by a spring 38 and an arm 45 is provided on the lever 17 for actuating a gas valve.
