Abstract

780,500. Friction wheel lighters. NORTH THAMES GAS BOARD. Oct. 13, 1955 [Oct 13. 1954], No. 29552/54. Class 75(3) In a friction wheel lighter wherein a uni-directional coupling is connected between a spring controlled trigger 32 and the flint wheel 23 so that movement of the trigger 32 against the action of its spring 35 is not transmitted to the flint wheel 23 but on release the trigger 32 is rapidly returned to its initial position to rotate the flint wheel 23. The flint-wheel 23 is fixed to a spindle 22 and the unidirectional coupling comprises a helical spring 38 closely encircling a part 36 secured to, or the spindle 22, with one end of the spring 38 anchored to the trigger 32 and the other end frictionally engaging the part 36 or the spindle 22 so that the spring 38 tends to unwrap when the trigger 32 is moved against the action of its spring 35 while it contracts to grip the part 36 on spindle 22 when the trigger 32 is released. The trigger 32 is fixed to a sleeve 28 loosely encircled by the spring 35, one end of which spring is attached to the trigger 32 and the other end to a fixed part of the lighter. The spindle 22 is rotatably mounted in spaced bearing blocks 12, 13 through which a gas supply pipe 17 extends to terminate adjacent the flint wheel 23. The flint 25 is pressed against the wheel 23 by a leaf spring 27 anchored to the bearing block 12.
