Turning gear for an engine includes a first gear 5 adapted to be connected to the engine, a gear unit 1, 3 movable radially relative to the first gear, between a first position in mesh with the first gear and a second position out of mesh with the first gear, the gear unit being adapted to be engaged when in its first position by the starter handle 7 in its operative position in such a manner that rotation of the handle in one direction will rotate the gear unit and rotation in the other direction will release the handle.
