Back-pedalling brake and free-wheel (arrangements.-In hub mechanism of the kind in which forward or backward pedalling adjusts axially through screw gearing a member k which is adapted to clutch the hub n and chain sprocket together or to brake the hub, there is arranged between the member k and a surrounding split sleeve b, a coupling sleeve h having coupling teeth at each end and formed. with slots through which pass keys l. During forward pedalling, the driving member d secured to the chair sprocket moves the members k to the right by means of their screw connection until the teeth on the right end of the coupling sleeve h engage teeth on the end of the ball cup u<1> fixed to the hub. The shoulder h<1> ensures that the sleeve h shall move with the member k. Backward rotation of the chain sprocket moves the member k to the left. The keys l bring about movement of the sleeve h to the left until the teeth at its left end engage teeth on the fixed cone v and hold it against rotation. At the same time the keys l expand the split sleeve b so that it engages the hub lining f and brakes the hub, the split sleeve being pinned or riveted to the coupling sleeve b. Rotation of the cone v is prevented by an arm r engaging necesses therein.
