Abstract
509,734. Coaster hubs. NOWIGK, H. Oct. 12, 1938, No. 29597. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1937. [Class 136 (ii)] In a free-wheel and back-pedalling brake hub for cycles, of the type in which the driving- clutch consists of rollers or balls mounted in a guide ring or cage and adapted during driving to be wedged against the hub by inclined surfaces on the driver, the rollers or balls are retained at other times in their inner or inoperative position in the following manner, in order to avoid jamming, e.g. when wheeling the cycle backwards. The driver c carrying the sprocket ring d is provided with a number of inclined surfaces g, Fig. 3, separated by radial projections h and adapted on forward rotation to wedge rollers i against the hub shell r. The rollers i are mounted in a cage k, Figs. 1 and 5, which is formed with triangular teeth l co-operating with similar teeth m on the brake-expanding cone n. The projections h are provided with inclined surfaces s cooperating with similar inclined surfaces t on the cage k, whereby on forward driving the cage is moved axially towards the brake cone n, while on free-wheeling and back-pedalling, the cage k is moved to the right by the cone n and is simultaneously rotated backwards until the rollers i are wedged between the lowest parts of the inclined surfaces g and the cage k.
